So did I pay too much? Got $10 off so $145 total. It was marked as XF?

no apologies needed Marve65,being blunt gets the point across! Yes, I can return it and will be doing so, the store owner is a buddy of mine and I honestly think one of his employees just made a big mistake!

I do like the detail of the eagle but the fields seem chewed up and that scratch is never a good thing. And the obverse rim from 12 to 3 looks strange. I know prices on FE's have been going up but with the problems that's just too much.

Marve65 I'm going to photograph it out of the cardboard case. would be nice if I could post it in the original image without having to compress to 300kb or less.

I took the coin out of the protector to see if it made a difference in the photo?

Just can't get a feel for the surfaces - I like the Eagles feather detail but the surfaces seem nicked and with the scratch on the obverse I don't think it is more than a 80$ coin but that is my opinion. Here is an ebay coin just for comparison - the fields are clean...

I see and understand what you're saying and it makes sense. The ebay Coin is a (Large Letters) which is valued a little under the (Small Letters) version like mine but close enough.
Here is a VF-30 I found on PCGS Coin Facts App that has a couple sizeable dings as well as a good Scratch, this is a $150 Coin according to PCGS ValueView?

regardless, I already called the owner of the coin store who has become a friend to me and he said he would happily refund my money or do an exchange!

Looks like certified XF-40 examples have been selling at auction in the $150-190 price range. Your purchase has lots of surface marks, impaired eye appeal, and less than XF detail. I agree you paid too much. For a similar price you should be able to find a better example.

The Coin Store Owner, who has also become a friend of mine agreed 100% and gave me a choice of my money back or store credit and I chose the credit but haven't decided on what I will get as of yet. He dropped the price on that coin and put it back on the shelf at Grade VF25.

Yes it looks VF25 to 30. The breast feathers near the beak are worn which will drop the coin from XF to VF. Other than that, the coin has good detail in all the other locations.

VF+ Details. I'd return it, it looks like a $40 coin to me.
