Isle Of Man Coins

My Wife collects the Cat series...I collect crown sized coins so I have a fair few from the Prolific issues of the isle of man.

Most of the Pobjoy Mint coins definitely seem to be aimed towards collectors but I wouldn't say they are all poorly design. I've seen a few neat ones while over here. I've picked up a few of the random special edition coins like the Tutankhamun triangle coins, which I think are neat looking. The new Tutankhamun coins with the sand in the triangle are pretty neat looking, imo, but they are all priced pretty high. I really like the new Seven Wonders of the Modern World series this year as I find them appealing. I mainly collect gold and silver bullion and don't really care for any of the Isle of Man bullion coins for the most part.

If any of you ever have the chance to see this island, it's definitely an interesting place to visit. It's always seemed a little slower than the rest of the world and like a step back in time, to some degree. After being here for 3 years, I've had enough of actually living here but it is a very scenic place to visit if you're ever in the area and not here during the winter months.

We get a lot of them here in change. There seems to be a lot of traffic between the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland.

Well, I have just come back to collecting and I collect Isle of Man but the real ones not modern. The last one being 1839. There are some on E Bay, but most are rather inflated prices as far as I can see, I have picked up a few there but not many. There are a few dealers with iom but it can be a bit difficult to find in their lists because of where they put them.

I did start to collect I.O.M coins some years back but got put off by the numbers and cost when I realised how many they do. Also I agree with the above that most are not good designs. I was shocked by the almost total lack of interest when I tried to sell them. In the end I sold to a well known London dealer who gave me a reasonable deal as I used the credit to buy their coin. Still made a loss though, but the coin I got in exchange is still one of my favourites, an 1887 young head 6d.

I've been collecting Isle of Man circulation coins for some years now - boy are they tough to get - some such as the 1997 50p are abundant, but others such as the 1991 / 1992 50p are rather tough. Some of the Christmas 50p command good prices on the net, yet they are far more common than most of the standard issues....
