No surprise on the grade, those are not insignificant scratches above the eagle. Reminds me of the 1814 E/A I posted on here awhile back. I returned that coin as there was no getting past the graffiti.

Quote: The inconsistency is just so, so tiring. I can point out 100's of CBH in straight holders with far worse. DOCC, I'm no fan of slabbing and that's just one of the reasons. I would much prefer that there was only one grade: genuine.

These scratches don't look random to me, hence the graffiti designation, IMO. I would add, given the state of the rest of the coin, how did this relatively tiny section of the reverse field end up this way, just does not seem random.

Studied this coin for too long... here's what I got, who's G W Williams and why did he scribe his name into this coin? The G is above the eagles right wing...the W in front of his beak and Williams starts above the head and runs down and ends at the left wing. Like I said looked a long time to find the "graffiti" and maybe Pareidolia set in.

GreasyF, that does look like a bit like a G ( or an O or C) in addition to two Ws followed by whatever after that.

Engraved letters above the eagle would be my best guess. Unfortunately at times, coins need to be sent in more than once.

i have to agree with rev graffiti above the eagle. in Tunnioc's contrast photo you can really see them standing out. those marks do not look like they could have been made due to circulation.
i think the coin is graded correctly.

Just got back on the computer, now I cannot unsee it either :-)
Now I can turn my dismay against myself for not noticing from the get go.
Tunnioc - what software/filter did you use? Want that ability in my toolset.

Tunnioc, that is very cool! Already uploaded an image to see how it works. I love all of the variations one has to choose from depending on what you're looking for. Thanks for sharing.

Yes it's very handy to see hidden things. I've used it for paintings, signatures, stamps, coins, sports cards, etc.
