I am sure you did your part as well in all your days as this dealers customer. I doubt he went around to everyone and did that. Congrats to you for doing good business. I love nice stories and happy endings. I am sure your dealer will be OK. I think it looks better in gold, like the sun is shining on it late in the evening at sundown, sort of symbolic.

MorgansRmine, Great story, have you thought about inviting him to join CCF? With all his years of knowledge of coins he would be a great asset to us here on CCF. Just a thought. John1

I would personally prefer the gold... photos don't always do it justice. But what I really posted to say was that that deserves one heckuva steak retirement dinner!

Wow. I always hope that a guy like that has a long and happy retirement, free of health issues.

I'm always sorry to hear about people retiring. I know we all look forward to not having to work every day but as a retired person I think it is better to keep on working. We get lazy, irritable (due to age), find ourselves discussing all the people we USED to know but are now deceased and worst of all our health starts to fail. If your rich I guess you can do a lot of traveling, but most are not. In his case I hope all goes well. And a really nice departing present.

My coin shop closed down within the last year. Wonderful owner. I miss her and her store. Believe it or not, there is now only one coin shop in the entire area of better than 100,000 people. I have yet to visit it, but now I will.

Great story, and he sounds like he was a token to the coin community in your area. I hope he has a nice retirement and makes me happy to continue supporting my local coin shops.

What a nice story...sounds like it must have been a pretty good friendship as well as a business relationship. I wish him well.

Wow, what an incredible gift! Quote: SuperDave: "There walks a man into retirement with his head held high." I would like the 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar the best, but the gold coins seem to be a closer (more 'accurate') match to the original 1913 Type 1 Nickel design.

What a great story and what a great coin. I have bought coins from the same dealer since the 70's (I went to high school with him). If he ever closes shop I think I will go into a long depression, he has taught me so much about coins, life and being an honorable person. All of us that have a relationship like that need to cherish what we have.

Here's an idea. You should buy him something that he likes, nothing extravagant like what he gave you, but something he would really like as you way of saying thanks for keeping me employed for 26 years and happy retirement.

The French poet Jacques Dilille wrote, "Fate chooses your relationships, you choose your friends". I would say that you both chose very well.

I know how much I lean on my local dealer here in Houston. If he retired it would be such a loss. Those kind of good business relationship are precious.
Some times when the turns you find yourself in a new chapter
