When I saw their good feedback, I didn't think i'd have any problems. They really should have used a free priority mail box which is more suited for coin rolls.

I think I would like to add Two Cents to the discussion here. First for your own sake always get everything insured. I tend to buy a lot of counterfeit coins that are nearly unique so when I spot a true rarity I always ask for Registered Mail. Usually the insurance proceeds would never cover what I believe the coin is actually worth. The PO will not accept poor packaging on a Registered package. Also - ask the seller every time you have something shipped - "How will it be shipped and in what form of container?" Do that until you know the seller. This seller is fairly new to ebay and even though he has a 100% rating he may not be truely experienced (I am giving him a BIG benefit of the doubt here.) Was anyone but me bothered by the text of his add? You could almost anticipate a problem when he said "For obvious reasons returns will only be given if the package was unopened and not tampered with and the coins are in original form." Why would you return an unopened and not tampered with package? Did he know something in advance? How many adds say "unopened package" and "not tampered with". I am not accusing anyone of anything but I suspect something fishy here. I just wonder if the rolls ever actually left the Post Office Building. The add itself is wickedly deceptive. How did he get the scans of the rarities that are in the boxes? In fact HOW EXACTLY does he know there are any rarities in an unsearched group of pennies? Did he start with a bunch of boxes of pennies and throw in a few rarities randomly for fun AFTER he scanned them? Hard to believe the pieces here. Unsearched - I doubt it. And Jim regarding phoney emails - I get at least two a week and they come in from ebay and PayPal ans well as auction sniper and a site I don't even use. Treat them like the unsolicited porn we all get. They will only steal from you what they can.

I actually posted two versions of this response by accident. Ignore this one.

I'm waiting to hear from the seller before I decide to take action.

I had bought on ebay 5 rolls of wheat cents. The package arrived today. But there were no coins as the package (bubble mailer) had a hole in it! I am out $24.95! I would have thought a box would have been better suited for that many coin rolls and not a bubble mailer! I didn't purchase any insurance. Never would have dreamed I would ever need it. I have just mailed the seller explaining the situation so I have to wait and see what will happen. I'm not sure what coverage I have as I used PayPal for this purchase. Waaaah!!! :( :(

David: I've read the comments on your dilema. It doesn't sound like the seller deliberately cheated you though. I wouldn't be surprised if you were to be able to work something out where the seller would make it right. I'm sorry for your disappointment, but don't assume that it's the result of bad faith. If you have asked the seller to make it right and he/she has refused, then what you have is a contract dispute (I'm a lawyer by day). Mail order sales are governed by the Uniform Commercial Code. A seller's obligation to deliver the commodity contracted for ends only at the POINT OF DELIVERY, which n this case is your mailbox. Here, the package was evidently destroyed before it got into your mailbox because it couldn't have destroyed itself once inside. Therefore, it is the SELLER's obligation to reimburse you or send you new coins. This is not something that can be contracted away with small print or disclaimers unless you actually agree (verbally or in writing) to be bound by those disclaimers. People can disclaim anything and everything, but most of the time, it's wasted breath because a simple disclaimer doesn't remove the seller's legal obligations. That said, being in the right does not always assure you of a remedy. The best way is to approach the seller with the assumption that he/she is a decent person (most people are actually, decent that is, or at least they want to be) and try to work something out. It doesn't have to be acrimonious. Just ask for your money back, or new coins. He/She appears to have quite a few!

Good news! Everything worked out! The seller missed my e-mail about my complaint as it went to his junk folder. I had opened a dispute with PayPal and that is how the seller found out there was a problem. He offered a full refund or 5 rolls so I chose the rolls! Yippie!!

Good to hear... It did seem like the seller did everything on his side. Normally it is a matter of no package being received, and ebay always parts with the buyer unless the seller can prove it was shipped. But with this, it was obviously shipped... a little different case than normal. But I am glad to see the seller worked with you on this. Jordan

Great news! Despite the horror stories you hear about bottom-trawling ebay dealers with no souls, I've found most are just regular people trying to do the right thing and make a profit at the same time. When you get the coins, I'd be interested to hear if you find anything, well, interesting...

I've been reading this with interest, but really had nothing to add any better than others already put it. Now, I would suggest that you leave this buyer the best possible feedback for being so willing to make it right. You might mention to him that at least one person (myself) is putting him on their Favorite Sellers' List as a result of his handling of the matter.
