I have experienced that same thing with ebay. If I use a buy it now price, it rarely sells but if I put the same item up for auction, it sells for higher than my "buy it now" price most of the time. Go figure. Yesterday I was bidding on silver bars on ebay. The seller also has a website,so I know what he sells these bars on the website for. Therefore I place my max bid just a few dollars below his listed price. Time and time again I have lost the auction because people will bid $20 to $25 over his buy it at his store price! Funny part is the seller usually contacts me with a second chance offer, so I end up with the same silver bars someone else has paid $25 more for.

I have to admit, the auction bidding has gotten the best of me a few times. I get caught up in the moment and after I win the bid I curse myself for going over my set amount. I just saved your store I'm my favorites. You have great prices. Once I get some cash saved you can bet on a purchase from me. Tim

It's weird isn't it TLS? ---------------------------- Well Thanks Tim. Whenever I go to purchase a coin, whether it be online or in person, I inspect the coin, figure out where I would like be to price-wise. If it is within my range, I buy it. If it is not, put it back and keep looking. With ebay, I prefer sniping. I just put in my max bid with about 5 seconds to go. If I get it, good. If not, oh well. If I did not do it that way, I would probably place a couple more bucks... then a couple more bucks, and then a couple more if I still have not gotten the high bid by then. (I do it that way when I am bidding something up for friends) Sniping normally keeps the price down as well. Because if I outbid somebody, then they will place another... which in turn drives the prices up!

It is strange. I have been caught in the fury of bidding wars before. Now I just put my max price in and let the chips fall where they may. Sometimes (like Yesterday) I just want to e-mail the high bidder and tell them, you just paid $25 over his store price, wise up! but I don't. It's profit for the seller and enables him to offer me the few dollars less price. ;o) Terry

Over the years I've purchased several items on ebay. The problem is like some previous posters mentioned, is that people get caught up in this "bidding frenzy". Great if you're the seller, not so great if you're the buyer. In my opinion, best to bid once at your max and hope for the best.

jdheyne I like your store, and I think you have very good pictures and you describe the coins very well.I wish everybody would be so honest. As previous posters stated here,i see it myself time and time again how people get caught on bidding frenzy, and they cannot stop ( didn't happen to me yet). To the subject of Buy it now, I believe it's maybe because a lot of people are looking for the cheapest deal, maybe that's why they tend not to buy at a fixed price. Then again,i think that some of them wouldn't know a good deal if it bit them in the.... I did a bit of web sites registering with search engines. It used to be manual for Google and the other big ones ( you have to go into their directories and add your web site). There are also automated programs for submission, but they were not recommended for Google at that time, because apparently Google would consider that spam and not include you. After you submit the web site to their directories, they send robots ( or spiders,or crawlers) to index the pages and verify the content you submited. One other thing : try to keep your web site with the same provider if possible. Each time you move it,the spiders will have to look for it again and re-index.( they do that on a periodic basis anyway, looking for outdated or changed content).

I avoid competitive bidding at all costs - If I want to try for a coin on ebay I determine my MAXIMUM price - deduct all associated costs and place a snipe for that EXACT amount using a Sniper site. Then I don't go back to the auction until it is OVER. The final results can be a big surprise at times. I have won coins for 1/10th of my snipe (usually very rare contemporary forgeries) and I have lost coins to bidders who paid 10 times what I believed a coin was worth (usually numismatic forgeries). ebay is amazing. I just wish that I could contact more bidders who bid on fraudulent coins and ask "Do you have rocks in your head?" But that violates several ebay rules and I have been officially warned for interfering with auctions in the past. I am actually glad I have this site to post my feelings. I hope some of these bidders join up.

I don't use sniper programs, but basically I do exactly like you : I decide MY final price and bid.Sometimes I do it right before auction closes or if I know I'm not going to be close a computer,i put the bid in advance and let the fortune decide.I've lost quite a few coins like that, but I don't regret it.

I haven't tried opening an ebay store, but I will list auctions occasionally. When I first started listing, I would put the starting bid at a few dollars below value, thinking I was protecting myself from being burned by a lowball bid. Hardly sold anything, and still had to pay listing fees. Took a chance and started a listing at .99 no reserve and the bidding was hectic and realized more than what I could've imagined. Ever since then, ALL of my listings are .99 No Reserve and I am rarely disappointed.

I start all my auctions at 1 cent, no reserve, and everything seems to go for more than what I was hoping. A few exceptions here and there, but overall I have done well.
