Well, I would never send any more than I can stand to lose. You could add tracking to the envelope.
I rarely send over $20.00 in cash.

Thanks for the info. I feel better about sending cash through the mail now. By the way, wheezydog, if you track an envelope, do you have to go to the post office?

I think so unless you can print your own shipping labels with postage. Maybe then it is automatic? Not sure but tracking cost like 95 cents or something like that.

So if the post office loses it, they contact you? And you can check on the computer if it arrives?

Tracking is fine but if it does get lost or stolen the PO won't reimburse if you have insurance.

I have shipped/received cash in the mail numerous times without a hitch

Oh so tracking is just to see whether it arrives or not?

Never had a problem with cash in the mail, and I'm talking regular mail. The key is to just be smart about it, and hide it so no one knows it's there -- either wrap it in paper, stick it in the middle of your letter, or put it into a greeting card, but make sure it can't be detected from outside the envelope.

I stand corrected...slightly. Not sure who would use Registered Mail domestically.

Quote:
Money (currency / cash) that is sent through the mail can be insured up to its value, within the stated limits:

Except for Registered Mail, the maximum indemnity for negotiable items (defined as instruments that can be convereted to cash without resort to forgery), currency, or bullion, is $15.00
For Registered Mail™ items, including money, the maximum insured value is $25,000
An item worth more than this must still be declared at full value, but the maximum insurable limit is $25,000.

You can also do a delivery confirmation for 19 cents. The post office can still prove it was delivered and save some money.

I'm sorry, I did mean delivery confirmation, not tracking. ( but it might be the same thing? )
Still, I think that if something has delivery confirmation, the chances of it getting conveniently lost are slimmer.

DC through PayPal online postage is 19 cents but at a post office it is 80 cents(70 cents for Priority). Also, per USPS regulations, DC can only be used on a parcel package of at least 3/4" thickness.

I think Delivery Confirmation also does tracking. I entered a couple of numbers a few times on the USPS site and it gives me the arrival and departures of the package. It never did that before. I guess people love to track their items like UPS does and USPS decided to do the same.

Sometimes tracking can be very important -- I have even used printouts of online tracking documents in court to prove a letter was delivered and signed for. The Court acccepts them as evidence in these cases.

As a general rule. I won't send more than a $20 in the mail. Everyone has different tolerance for risk, so that one is up to you.

A couple of years ago I used to both receieve and send cash via regular mail.. I used to send up to 100 Euros (in registered mail and concealed inside the pages of a book..) and used to receieve (only once!) up to 400 euros by the same book method..
just try finding a small size, solid pocket book or booklet. Put the money between the pages and perhaps wrap the book with aluminium foil or packaging paper and send it via registered mail.. This is just an advice.
