I don't understand...how 2009 ASE's are not available... I bought them this past April dated 2009...I am sure there is a way outside the mint (their stuff is over priced anyways) to get the coins you want...I did not buy a proof so they may be affected differently.

We would not have this problem if the ASE program was not just a subsidy for domestic silver producers. The legislation that created the ASE prevents the mint from sourcing foreign silver to meet demand.

You can't buy the "Bullion" ASE's from the Mint.......only in the secondary market.
The Proofs and Uncirculated ASE's are the only ones you can buy directly.

And actually, for those interested......I believe you can still buy the "2008 Uncircluated Dollar Set" on the Mints website.

It's the circular Set containing an ASE in the middle, surrounded by a Native Dollar and each Presidential dollar for that year.

Personally I think the uncirculated silver eagles look better than the proofs. I just can't see paying extra for a bullion coin just for the fact its a proof when I can get the uncirculated version for much less.

How about a couple tears for the end of the series?

So....I suppose we can expect HSN to be offering all the 2009 Bullion ASE's for an outrageous price now !

Or Littleton will make some proofs.

Yep, it's the proof that's not available.

This is a bad idea, the prices at the mint are all ready too high, now we can't get an ASE proof? It isn't just the ASE either. Most of the collectible coins are not being made, (as in gold and silver).

Kill the series then, who wants a "spotty" collection? I look to collect a series. You would think they would at least offer a more limited amount to keep people interested in collecting.

New Gold Record Despite Extreme Manipulation Tactics
Obverse or Reverse? Judging Which Side Can Be Tough

No proof one-ounce American Eagle gold or silver collector coins will be produced in 2009 by the U.S. Mint.

The bad news, cleared for release at noon Eastern Daylight time Oct. 6, doesn't end there.

There will also be:

• No "W" mintmarked uncirculated silver American Eagle collector coins,
• No proof fractional gold American Eagles,
• No "W" uncirculated one-ounce gold American Eagles (the fractionals of this were killed at the end of last year),
• No Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set, which would include a "W" silver American Eagle, and
• No platinum American Eagle bullion coins.

But the Mint also gives as well as takes.

Perhaps the most surprising new issues coming are the probable Oct. 15 release of the 2009 gold Buffalo bullion coin and the Oct. 29 release of the proof collector version.

Fractional gold American Eagle bullion coins in tenth-ounce, quarter-ounce and half-ounce weights are scheduled tentatively for release Dec. 3.

A proof one-ounce platinum American Eagle also is scheduled tentatively for release Dec. 3. The Mint stresses the word "tentatively."

It is still battling to supply the market with American Eagle bullion coins, which are mandated by law whereas the collector versions are not.

"Because of unprecedented demand for American Eagle gold and silver bullion coins, the United States Mint suspended production of 2009 proof and uncirculated versions of these coins," it says.

Even though the rationing of the bullion gold and silver American Eagles ended June 15, acquiring adequate supplies of blanks has been an ongoing struggle for the Mint. In light of this, it might perhaps be surprising that the Mint would bother to produce the gold Buffalo coins this year at all.

Those with a lawyer's eye will spot the exception in the language here: "All available 22-karat gold and silver bullion blanks are being allocated to the American Eagle gold and American Eagle silver bullion coins programs as mandated by Public Law 99-185 and Public Law 99-61, respectively."

The one-ounce Buffalo gold bullion coins and collector coins are struck on 24-karat gold planchets.

Once again the Mint holds out the hope that the collector coins suspended this year will be returned to production, but now in 2010, as it works "diligently with current and potential blank suppliers to increase the supply of bullion coins blanks."

I feel betrayed, only the Big dealers were given the chance to supply the "collectors", for years we all waited to order the ASE'S and this is the slap we receive, not only no more silver UNC'S or Proofs we are told that the more than 2-million UNC'S they did produce, we never got a chance to order one, from the Mint!!

I wonder if the 2009 proof platinum eagles will have a premium on the secondary market, as they will be the only 2009 proof American Eagles produced?

Wish I had done that !.......still might look into it from my local coin shop .......that is......if they don't start charging an "extra premium" now, once this is common knowledge (though I'm sure coin dealers are quite aware of the situation)

This weeks issue of Coin World is hard to read with so many whining over ceasing the ASE proofs. Personally I think a design upgrade is needed. Maybe that could happen with the 2010 issue. Okay, enough ranting!

I personally love the design, it is one design that reminds me of the coinage of the years when I was a kid, in fact it is an absolutely beautiful Obverse, the Reverse is another topic, thus we all collect what we want and have our opinions, I hope the powers to be some how "allow" this 2009-W ASE to be produced or there will be an awful lot of empty holes to go unfilled for this year......
