to the community, If you can post some pictures of your coins, close ups of each coin is best. Swamperbob is the forums expert on Spanish Reales.

I too say And I too know very little about such coins. but stick around and as you figure out how to discribe them and with photos you may learn all about them, their value, how to care for them, etc. Lots and lots of well educated Numismatist around here.

Welcome to the CCF! Your coins look nice. Unfortunately, I have to wait till I get home. I'm on my cell and the pictures are not very good on this screen :-(

What you may want to try also is describing the coins as best you can if your know your photos are not great. Take your time and explain the best you can. Your photos so far show most are foreign coins and there is a separate forum here for coins from other countries.

kcredwolf- Those are in fact Spanish colonial 8 Reales. Unfortunately these coins are very frequently targeted by forgers. So we'll need some much clearer pictures in order to be able to authenticate them. Would it be possible for you to take some higher-res. pictures of each coin's obverse and reverse?

When you take the better pictures, include pictures of the edge of the coin as well. Often fakes will have plain or reeded edge (both sure signs of a fake) but there are also high quality fakes that can fool most experts. On the plus side, many of the "contemporary counterfeits" are worth more than a common 8 Reales. If your coins are real and are common dates, mints and assayers they are worth $25-$50 each depending on who wants them and condition. From your description and what I can see in the photo you have lower condition Carlos III, Carlos IV and both varieties of Ferdinand VII. Nice coins and I can't wait to see better pictures.

kcredwolf -
If you can't get better pictures with your camera, try a scanner if you have one. Sometimes you can get fairly good images with a scanner.
Just be careful that the coins don't scratch the glass or the glass scratch the coins. I put a piece of cardboard under the edge of the scanner lid to hold it up slightly. That keeps pressure off the coins.

Thank you so much for your help and advice! I will try the scanner this weekend. I have been enjoying your forum, reading up and learning a lot. =) I can tell you that the edges of the coins are all the dot-dash looking ones (i cant remember the other name they called that. some have quite a few interesting chopmarks, one doesn't hae any I can see, but it is one that is quite faded. I think my grandad bought them from Montgomery Ward, but I dont know when. I found an advertisemet for the reales in his papers. Have a great day everyone !
