Metalman has given some very good advice. I would go on to say having a dream is a good thing. WORKING to achieve that dream is a BETTER thing. Coin collecting is a life long adventure and we/you/us can't do it all at once. Enjoy the hunt as half the fun is the journey to get there!!!

Here's a thought to ponder. I have a neighbor who goes on a 10 mile bike ride every morning. He tootles around parking lots etc. and looks for things that are shining on the pavement. He had $3.00 in his pocket last week in less than an hour as well as some very good exercise. Last year he said that he collected over $2300.00 in just change that he picked up from the ground. Some people may think that's silly to pick up a coin but, it may be THE coin or it may be a coin to save to spend. A thing that I have done in the past is to walk past pay telephones and check the return box. I know how silly that sounds but, I found $3.00 in one once! It's a thought!

Hi everyone. DSking I do that lol, Nice to know I'm not the only one. Unlike Buffaloboy I'm not asking for your coins. Im just making a suggestion that it would be cool to have like a little donation center that some of the members with some coins to part with donate them to kids like me and Buffalo boy

Hmm ... I'm very new to coin collecting ... About 2 weeks.
I've always been a collector of things though, I have an enormous collection of MTG trading cards, and about 200 pair of a certain brand of old shoes, and now it's coins. I collect things because it stimulates me, and it's fun. I never let a hobby take me over financially, and if you find yourself in a hobby which you cannot afford, then I think it's time to pick a new hobby.
The thing I've very very quickly realized is that coin collecting need not be expensive by any means. To start with, and learn the trade, I've started collecting spare change. I mean the nickels, pennies, quarters, and dimes you get in change from McDonald's and Albertson's. I'm having insurmountable fun putting them into albums and tubes, in fact I'm begging my friends to let me buy their spare change at face value!! I do often feel that I want more, more, more! But asking for coin donations will not get you what you want. Let's say you get 10 coins ... then what?
I think we all need to look inside ourselves at some point or other in our collecting career and ask what it is that makes us love it so much. I think those who have found their Shangrilla, have not found it in hoarding, or slurping up a myriad of $1000 coins, but rather in finding a coin niche that fit in their wallet, and satisfied their craving for collecting.

There is one thing that I would like to add. While asking for coins that one wouldn't mind giving them away is perfectly suitable, but let me remind you that you should try and participate the forums more often so that we get to know you more. I wouldn't really want someone that I gave a bunch of coins to, just to say thanks and bye.

The reject bin on the coinstar machine could be a great start to a world coin collection.

For another source for old, lower quality coins you might check out your local dealers and see if they have any junk boxes to search through. There are some dealers around here who have old type coins thrown together in boxes for as little as $5.00. Granted they are really worn but they are probably about what you would get from someone in here for free and you can pick and chose this way as well as get to know your dealers. One local dealer has a box of world coins that he lets my kids scavenge through for a few freebies. Another has a box of world coins that he sells 10 for $2.00. Yeah, the freebies are a much better deal but try the coin shops and let the dealers know you are interested and on a low budget, ask them what they have. If you're lucky you'll find some decent people who are interested in helping out a young collector and you never can tell what they can come up with for you.

One of my little coin shops even tears the Mint sets apart and throws them into a bin to sell individually and only for a buck or two (if that). He keeps them in the Mint wrappers and they are fine collectibles.

You're fine DJ. Everyone knows that you're a youngen and are just willing to help and to guide you. We all make mistakes, own up to them and life goes on. I'm fine with everyone and so are you. Maybe we should all end this thread now and start fresh.
