And honestly, if I knew the machine was cheating me, I would quit using it. And if I had to prove a point to the bank, I would buy 3 rolls of dimes from them and have them watch me run them through the machine and see the results.

Instead of waiting for the ticket, if you know you are just doing dimes and you see 1 cent change in the amount it is showing as its counting, stop pouring them in the hopper and get the teller admittedly and tell her.

I'm sorry ratman that we aren't communicating very well. Like I said I have been shorted at two different branches of the same bank so I did "quit using the machine". The banks also give detailed reports of the coins counted. The banks have made right both times.. Does it really matter what the receipt says ... you can't prove it to the teller that you dumped $40.60 or $55.00 you are at their mercery to make it right.

Coin counters counting dimes as pennies is a nature of the beast. TCF's coin counters do it all the time. I have stopped dumping loose dimes in anybody's counters and now roll all of them because of that.
I have dumped only dimes and argued with the bank managers about the pennies coming up in the numbers on the slip on several occasions. Their generic answer is always, "the machine is never wrong, you must have had some pennies in the bag you didn't know about".
When I was losing 1 sometimes 2 dimes at every $1000 dump, I considered it part of the game. Just like getting a short roll every now and then. But the last staw was when I wasn't even at the $100 mark and I already had 9 pennies showing on the digital readout.
I stopped the machine, got the manager and demanded we clean out all of my uncounted coins. He was hesitant at first, but he knew the truth and finally agreed. So he opened the machine and we got all my coins out. I have been rolling dimes ever since.
I can only imagine how much money the banks are stealing from unsuspecting customers who come in with uncounted mixed change...

I think we are communicating fine. And yes, we are at the mercy of the banks. Apparently you only run dimes through the machine. I run mostly nickels and cents and pocket change. I just stated what I'm going to do if I decide to start searching dimes. It appears to me that running cents and dimes together can lead to problems if the machine is not working properly. Running the dimes seperately will let me know if the machine has the same problem that you are describing.

No only nickels and dimes this weekend I picked up $60 nickels and $20 in dimes. Went through them and dumped them. The coin machine only came up with $59.?. It counted pennies of which I only had one, 5.? of quarters of which I had none, about $1.5 of dimes almost $2 bucks of pennies. I don't believe it even counted all the coins from the person before me. After I went to get the manager and the machine had counted "all" the coins the manager ran it again and it counted another .77. I always run it a second time because of that. I believe I'm done with the coin machines and will wrap my own ..interesting thing though is this bank won't accept rolls they make you dump them in the machine.....

Counters are not 100% accurate, this I'm positive about. I've been through 4 $50 bags taken out of my banks counter and found 3-4 dimes in each bag. On the flip side...I was dumping cents in noticed a couple of dimes so I took them out. Near the end of the run I tossed in the dimes and they counted as cents! I didn't bother to complain because I don't want to start trouble. The service is too valuable to me and I like buying bags from them.

I roll hunt thru halves. If I get the halves loose I will stack them in $10 worth in a flat Fed box that I save and confirm my count. I now will verbally tell the teller what I have counted in the bag. When I get Fed boxes I will still stack $10 worth at a time but will count how many I take out. Where I go to get them counted the coin counter will "bag" $500 and will stop, then the bag will have to be changed. I think the loose some coin when the bag is changed is my guess. I was shorted roughly $20 on my halves last week.

If you're going through the trouble of counting and stacking $10.00 at a time...you might as well roll the suckers and bypass the machine and eliminate potential loss due to the machine miscounting them. It really doesn't take but a few seconds to slide them in a wrapper and fold the ends. I know that banks with a coin counter don't usually take rolled change....but many other banks do!

I believe you have to "know"what you are dumping into those machines to "know"if it is shorting you or not!
I just the other day counted out, all quarters, $148.00, some loose change, placed them in the coin counter and it came up with a grand total of 139.50. The difference being $8.50, and I know it was that amount because I counted the change, also the machine does not only not work well when mixing change, ie nickels, dimes, cents, it just does not count ALL the coins placed in the machine in the customers favor or even close.
My thought was to ask for 5-quarter rolls, ask a manager to oversee the machine counting the rolls I just bought and let them see, however I at this point believe the banks and the powers to be are very aware of this problem, and being they are on the plus side of the error, nothing is done to remedy this "customer" problem.I would suggest that anyone who is shorted see the manager, and you will be told to right your name and address down and when the vendor counts the days coins, and there is a surplus, you will be notified, this all takes about 5-10 business days for those results to come in, I am told. Call the main corporate office and the times I did from this problem( not the 1st time this has happened to me) and you will get results, very much sooner than you would think.....good luck..
Like stated above the banks will not take the rolls, if you take the time and effort to roll the coins, But I do think if you go to your bank, roll the coins and place your account number on the rolls, the bank will take them, I think....
I am not sure I am comfortable placing my account #'s on anything other's will see and receive if they ask for rolls after I leave the bank, my answer, I do not have the definitive cure all answer for this problem, I just know it is occurring everywhere and we are all losing money to the machines......

As a former bank teller who worked on such machines, dimes going into pennies is quite a common occurance. When the machines get dirty, it happens alot. The other thing that can go wrong are dollar coins in the half bag. Any coin that is smaller than the denomonation before it has the potential for giving you a loss, and any that is smaller than the denomonation after it can give you a gain. Nickels tend to end up in quarter bags in dirty machines, and quarters in the dollar bags. I've both made money and lost money running my coins through machines, though even when I lose money it is gennerally such a small amount that it is offset by the reject coins I find that people have left in the reject bin (two or three times over 30 dollars!). -XoG

No, Dept of weights and measures regulates all scales and pumps used for commerce.
The variance for calibration on such items as fuel pumps is rather strict.
Grocery scales, cab meters, and so on are all regulated with surprise inspections as well as annual certifications for accuracy.

Yes, there are some problems with the machines. I use to work for Commerse Bank but now known as TD bank. They have a coin counting machine that I use every so often but a few times I used it I noticed that the amount was less of what I put in. When I opened the machine up there was a huge amount of pennies stuck inside. So ask to check the inside of the machine every time you put coins in the counter at a bank!
