a very interesting topic...TPG's...I have long questioned why there is no BALANCE IN GRADING from one grading company to another, (as we have have seen many an incompetent company grading MS67 to many Morgan dollars or MS70 to many circulated coins INB.) as a colletor where are we to go?? in general..we are trusting the company whom we submit our coins to for an honest evaluation of a coins grade....meaning monetary confirmed value..WHY ELSE... WE are spending our money, in an obscure money market......still it is a money market......or just as I am a love for my trinkets.......but in the end.its a money market thing......the fact that thousands of dollars are made by a single point in the grading system is why I am writing tonight....WHY IS THERE SUCH A DIFFERENCE IN GRADING>.....BETWEEN GRADING COMPANIES...(despite fake companies)....we are all supposed to be on the same scale....the top 3 grading companies still do not agree............I think the public should step up,,,,,but we have no money to contest "WHY" there are not the same grading standards.........Just so you know, I'm not disputing the difference, just need to understand why there there is such a difference(BESIDES MONEY)......I'm only asking in theory.....WHY>>>>

Well said aladinslamp
On a different note my choices are ANACS 1st, then NGC and PCGS last. Because the public (at present) prefer NGC and PCGS they, rate a higher price which is just fine with me. It means I can buy a better graded coin in a ANACS holder for less $$$.

Hi, is it possible if you have Anacs graded coin example MS62 and when you crack the ANACS slab and submitted to PCGS the outcome will be Cleaned? Have you ever experience? Thanks

I think it would be possible for an ANACS MS-62 coin to be called cleaned by PCGS though I have no experience. Some coins fall into the gray area between market acceptable and unacceptable cleaning/dipping and even the same TPG can call it cleaned one day and grade it another day. I have seen ANACS downgrade a coin, sometimes by a lot, because of weak luster which can be caused by cleaning/dipping.

Yes it would be possible, it would also be possible to have the same thing happen cracking out NGC or PCGS coins and sending them in to NGC or PCGS. There have been plenty of examples reported of people cracking out coins from the major TPG's and sending them either back in to the same or different major TPG companies and having them come back as cleaned or rejected for active PVC contamination.

Most major collectors prefer NGC and PCGS. All major coins are graded by NGC and PCGS.
Right now PCGS w/CAC sticker sells for more than NGC w/CAC sticker however I like them both. Without the CAC sticker PCGS coins still sell for more. I have no problem with ANACs but prefer the other two especially NGC. I don't drink the kool aid

Quote: Hi, is it possible if you have Anacs graded coin example MS62 and when you crack the ANACS slab and submitted to PCGS the outcome will be Cleaned? Have you ever experience? Thanks My experience on that point, is based on cracking out slabbed PCGS coins and re-submitting them, raw back to PCGS, (hoping for an upgrade) and getting 80-90% of them body bagged (this was before they slabbed problem coins) heck they had already called them okay once, now they didn't cut the muster. I had one Morgan dollar, an 1885-CC, I sent in 6 different times trying for a MS65 grade. 4 times it was returned as cleaned, once it came back slabbed MS63, once MS64 when I finally decided to cut my losses and sold it to another friend of mine. He cracked it out of the MS64 PCGS holder and sent it to NGC and got the MS65 grade right away. - This was before the collector club programs (around 1999-2002) and when I submitted coins to PCGS it was through a large volume wholesale dealer/friend of mine in SoCal PCGS returned the coins to his office, not me, in fact PCGS had no records of me being the owner of the coins. After the Collectors club stuff started and the registry sets (which I'm no real fan of, and see no value at all to the hobby other than bragging rights) I find PCGS to be a money hungry grading service, their current costs are out of line with their services and speed of order. But still, I'd rather have my coins in PCGS holders when I'm selling today, due to market perception, that may change in the future, I hope. I personally use ANACS for my coins in my personal collection I want certified, variety confirmation and storage protection on. I don't find NGC, SEGS, ICG grading or variety attributions to be as consistent or accurate and PCGS won't even put a variety designation on many coins I have and if they did the cost is almost as much as the original grade.

When CAC started to grade the graders of only PCGS and NGC slabs, it is my personal opinion that the slabs not stickered are over-graded. Since many of the slabs I have are ANACS, SEGS and the old PCI slabs, I would like to see CAC expand their service to accept the slabs mentioned above, and instead of placing a green sticker, they place a color coded sticker with a pre-printed grade on it (over the original grade) that would match both NGC or PCGS grading quality. This would bring all slabs on par with each other. As an example, say I send a SEGS AU58 (any denomination) to CAC (should they ever consider this) for a honest grade sticker, and have it returned with a EF45 sticker, I could then expect NGC or PCGS money for this on the secondary market (like ebay).. I just don't know the legality of doing something like this.

Perhaps a dumb question: if one joins NGC's collector's club, one gets 5 free grading submissions in that first year of membership. Do they give another 5 the next year, or is that just a 'promotion' that could go away any time?
I'm hesitating between joining PCGS or NGC; I'm a bit angry with NGC ever since they mislabeled a submission I sent via a dealer not too long ago. -SCS

The free submissions you pay for up front with the higher membership cost. NGC looks like they only give you 5, PCGS has one for 8 for 199 a year. If you rejoin at that same level the following year youll get the free ones again, if you do the level without the free ones you wont

Regardless of how they grade compared to any of the others-----and they all basically grade the same---its just that there is a perception that PCGS/NGC are better. I do not know who is most consistent- I've seen undergraded coins by all, I've seen overgraded coins by all.
My beef with ANACS is the HORRIBLE customer service. They do not ship out when they say- and they wont even answer emails. I have 20 some coins that are 10 days over due- and they still show in "grading" like they have since november 15th- its december 29th today. They were supposed to ship on december 20. NGC tracks them all on arrival, and they move through the system quickly and efficiently and you can always see exactly what is going on. So - ANACS- get it together- or you will always be the lesser than- to your bigger yet younger brothers. The word in business these days is "CUSTOMER SERVICE" and you have lots to learn. Your younger brothers are superior in every way with the way they track orders, the speed or processing them, and the response to emails- with anacs there is none.

The name ANACS is older, but it has been bought and sold several times where a completely new company was put together under the name. The current version was around 2008 I believe while as far as I know PCGS and NGC have never had a complete sale of the company

The fees ANACS charges exactly reflect their buyer confidence factor relative to the big two - a fat discount.

Quote: ANACS In my opinion...horrible. They are much cheaper, but their grades and and not just a poll of opinions.attributions vary greatly and are often wrong. This would be a great opportunity for members to post pictures and explain why they believe the TPGs are wrong. A teachable moment, and not just a poll of opinions.

The market obviously places higher values on PCGS and NGC coins. For someone looking to sell, it might be wise to use them. I prefer the NGC holders most, I like their look most. I think ANACS is a great option for collectors primarily looking to attribute and safely store their collections. The majority of the ANACS coins I've seen in the last few years I find reasonably agreeable for grade. Pricing is much more affordable and they are the kings of attribution. For disclosure, my collection has around 20 NGC coins, 3 PCGS, and 2 ANACS. I will soon be submitting my large cents and Morgan dollars, and plan to use ANACS.
