I though so too but after looking closer you see it doesn't cross 9's like in a picture

The upper loop of the S appears to closed as well.
As for the reversde the middle bar of the B should be angled downward like so /
The middle bar on this coin appears to not be angled downward like it should.
I plan to buy an 09-S VDB this year but I will not buy one on line unless its certified and/or I know the person or company I am buying it from knows what they are doing.
Hopefully some of the other pros will be along to comment further on this one.

I sent a message to the seller and asked if they were 100% positive it was authentic. Just don't like to see stuff like that on ebay. Gives numismatist a bad rap. |

I just enlarged it and placed them side by side. It looks like a number 3 to and the line on the photo is hiding part of the S and 0 and the placement look good.

I can say the photo's to line up with, kind of suck..the lines are not consistent for referencing...some touch the zero and others don't....just looking at the "S" position to the 19......its too far to the left..of the 9, its under it by a bit......number one is the closest to be in line but not under and to the left...using those pictures for reference

The MM doesn't look right. It looks like the commonly faked S mint mark. I'll never understand why people bid up these questionable, raw key date coins on ebay. Just plain DUMB! If you're going to spend $1000, why not be 100% sure your coin is real and why not see it in hand? No way in heck am I going to blow a grand without holding the coin first. I agree with BadThad and Moe.  It is not worth the gamble just to save some money. I would much rather "over pay" for the coin and buy it in person. |

However, there was 18 bidders, maybe, pending how many bidders are fakes too. Not sure if fake since MM's were placed on the coins after they were minted so not perfect in authenticating with out close exam. Still I really don't see how anyone could take a chance for that much money.

Also, only four obverse dies were used for the 1909-S VDB so mintmark position is one of the primary means of authentication by photograph since there are only four possible mintmark positions as shown in the first post. |
