This is without a doubt the Red Book listed doubled die.

Sounds as though the seller just didn't know the terminology. Maybe from another country?

We acquired it in the late 60's during a coin club show outside Boston...it's not slabbed; it's in stapled 2x2 and says, "re-engraved." We paid $20 for it back then.
I do not know what "re-engraved" means. It's not graded. At one time, someone wrote "AU" on the 2x but then crossed it out. It would easily be AU but for several scratches on the obverse.

It's not "re-engraved". That's improper terminology to describe a second set of letters. Back then many people didn't have a clue what a doubled die was.
$20 back in the 60s was way too much money for it. Even in today's equivalent it wouldn't be worth it with scratches on the obverse. At best I estimate the value as VF-EF value with scratches on an AU coin, and that value would run around $80-$90.

thanks, copper, et al.
My dad was a savvy collector. I cant say I was back then; I was quite young, starting my collection when I was about 10 yrs old. I cannot think of any key date in the major coin denominations we did not acquire. More amazing are some of the duplicates and triplicates of key dates and varieties.
Our collections began with my grandfather back in the 1800's

Definitely the Doubled Die; very nice! I've found hundreds of 1939's in the 17,000 rolls of nickels I have gone through the last few years, and I have yet to come across one. Would love to, though!

Very nice find indeed. I think I would have passed out if I stumbled upon such a fine example as this one.

I would have it slabbed even though it's not extremely valuable but if in the future you decide to sell, possible finding a better example, there will be no doubt of it's authenticity.
