I have recently started a circulated nickel book. I going to try to do almost all of it from searching rolls. I am mainly doing this in my extra time. there are alot of proof sets I am trying get so I am bought 10.00 dollars last week and I will contiune returning them and getting new ones every week or so. this is just a fun way I amm doing it since I am on a very limited coin budget right now but still want to look through coins. So this is just a fun way for me to have some coins every week to play with. So it is not a set I am in a hurry or looking for the nicest set just something fun to do. I also have a Cent and dime book I ma working on. I am very focus on getting all the clad proof sets from 1960-2006 so that is my focus plus I am alway looking to add high graded coins to my type set. But yes I do like Jefferson nickels as well but is more then something extra to do not a main focus

I think it would be a challenge to put a nice Jefferson set together now from change-simply because the keys 38D and S, the 39 D AND S, and the 1950 D are simply not to be found in circulation- so- plan on purchasing these- they are still very affordable. Also the Wartime Nickels have pretty much been collected and either melted down- when worn, they are dirty looking- so this is why I say it would be a real challenge to put a nice set together- How many EF OR Au wartime nickels do you see on auctions? I have not seen an uncirculated set of Wartime Nickels offered in Coin World or on ebay since I can't remember when; I collected Wartime BU nickels and put together several sets- still have 4 Uncirculated sets of these- Yesiree- a real challenge is still awaiting for the brave at heart.IMHO Dewey

My wife and I recently completed a Jefferson collection each, almost entirely from circulation.

After 2Cents its jeffersons for me. I have so may sets on the go its not funny. I am just three coins short of completing my Post 1965 PR69 DCAM set. (I don't count the SMS sets despite what PCGS has to say) It is possible to find the 50D in circulation. Also War Nickels. The few casinos tht still have coin slots and not ticket in ticke out machines are a good source. I usually come back from Vegas with a roll or two of War Nickels and to date I have found 1 well circulated 50d It takes a couple of hours to go through $500 in nickels but it keeps us entertained.

I think Jeffersons are an excellent collection.
I have a complete raw set. All after 48 are UNC and I am slowly replacing my remaining circulated ones as I come across them and the budget permits.
I also have a PCGS registry set I am working on even slower the the raw set.

Hi all,I hope I can be as lucky as Gary and his wife, and get these in circulation.I hear these are all pretty affordable as it stands.I like the plain old worn dates, would it be easier to get these in the dates I still need?sn31.

All of the Jeffersons are easier to get worn than unc except the past couple years and the 1950-D. This coin was saved out of circulation because of its relatively low mintage. It was probably the spark that lit the fire under BU rolls and bags in the early 1960's. At that time one could get a brand new bag of coins and sell it at a 50% profit. If it were even a couple years old then the sky was the limit. '50-D nickels were trading as high as $30 each at the time which is more than $150 in today's money.

These can be found in circulated condition but require some effort.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Dimes and nickels are my favorite Sandra. I have found many Jeffersons in circulation also, mostly 50's and 60's. I put them in 2x2 cards for now, thinking I will someday start a set but I am so AU/BU neurotic that I can only afford my Mercs, V-Nickels and Franklins for now.

I put mine away in 2x2's for now too.I have only a few from the 40's,and a couple from the early 50's(not the 50d).I'll keep searching my change,I'm not sure if I'm ready to invest into these nickels yet,but I definitly hang onto them.As I stated above I like the plain old worn coins, but I plan to start at least one set of something in UNC or proof.Still hav'nt made my mind up to which coin set it will be.I'm just having alot of fun the way I'm doing it now. Thanks for all the responses,sn31.

You can find most if not all of the Jefferson nickels in bank rolls, it just takes some time and effort on your part. The best part about searching bank rolls: you get the coins for 5 cents!

I get a lot of jeffs from the 40's and 50's. I accumulate them in boxes, tubs, etc until I a slow day then we list groups of them on ebay, usually starting them at face value. Older groups of jeffs are fun to look through and there's usually a good mix of dates and mintmarks that can be found in circulation. A great series to start youngsters on, as well as anyone who wants to collect from pocket change.
