Shadow, that is one nice looking coin. I'm going to say VF-35 to possibly EF-40. I ususally look for more detail in the hairlines and on the reverse around the eagle's talons, arrows and feathers. Is that a die clash above the 25C? I also agree with the others that maybe it has been cleaned, but (and I'll repeat) what coin that is going on 200 years old hasn't been cleaned. A keeper in every sense of the word. Congrats!

Unfortunately its not mine, but the seller is asking $1500 for it. I think its a bit high and I'll probably offer him closer to $1000, or maybe a partial trade.

$1150 would not be bad. I agree with VF35 SC. May have been lightly cleaned in the past.

I would say no. It's too much of a risk without having it graded. VF20 is $390 and EF40 is $1590. Right now rare coins aren't doing too well and I think the coin would only net VF30 Details. For $1100 I'm sure you could find a better problem free coin. I bet the dealer knows the surfaces aren't original. I would NEVER buy a coin ungraded with such a difference in price between two grades.

Here's one for sale for only $600 and has some nice character especially the die crack. I know the dealer too.

Different design. These are much much rarer than the small size, especially this date. I too wanted to pay $1000 so I may pass on it, but I'll have to see.

I realized the different design. Also slightly smaller.

I agree that $1000 is as high as I would go. Now if you know the dealer well and they guaranteed it would grade problem-free VF35 or your money back, then I'd go $1150.

I've dealt with him before and hes a forum member on another forum, but I haven't dealt with him extensively. He did admit that it was 'lightly dipped but retoned almost completely'.

There is also the consideration that I am not seeking this for type, just because I like it. I'd have to get a good price for that reason. If this were a bust dime (an 1811 or something) where it was borderline, I'd probably take it. I just filled by 1824 slot with a minorly impaired XF, which would have cost me greatly otherwise.
I decided to pass on it for this reason. Its not a bad coin, but because its not going to go into one of my sets, the price is too high.

Yeah. I just like the large size quarters and haven't really gotten my hands on many of them.

Yep. I was thinking about EF- with these issues. Seems my perception was accurate.

XF-40 This is a nice coin. I'm not real good on telling if it has been cleaned in the past. Thats why I stick to buying cetified coins.
