jstineman--I know of a lot of old sites, mostly in the West bay--but from what I've been told, they aren't legal for detection. So it would probably just be a letdown.

I have found many conflicting answers when I try to find out legal places to go and detect. I just got my unit and I was hoping to take it out but I don't want to go places where I am not supposed to be. Some sites I have seen say only public land and some say only private land, does anyone have a definitive answer?

There are a lot of old sites in the bay area--all the way back to the colonial Spanish era--but I no longer live in the area. Good luck!

Ahh I always bike through the montebello open space reserve and always daydream about what metal detecting it would be like :D

Left, I found a musketball at that park--not in a place where people discharge weapons, so I'm guessing it's very old.

Hey Dvc,
Tried to email you but this site won't let me so:
Hey there,
New to the hobby - I'm an art instructor by trade...always was fascinated with hunting for treasures/fossils as a kid... Now in my 30s I finally got a decent detector entry level one anyway... Got a garret ace 250. I live in San Francisco and have had pretty bad luck so far...tons of bottle caps and tabs...and some clad. I still get excited every time it beeps though.
Anyway, I just read you had a list of good spots in San Fran and nearby hikes(another hobby of mine) I'd be super grateful of you could email me that list you spoke of!
Take care!

Hi Micah,
I started this thread in 2010, and I've been living in Seattle for a few years.
I'm no longer familiar with where it may be OK to use a metal detector.
There are a lot of possible sites, all depending on whether detecting is allowed.
Just off the top of my head, you might check out Mt. Tamalpais north of the Golden Gate.
There was a rail line that wound its way up the mountain in the late 1800s--could be interesting.

Thats ok,
If you still have a list of possibilities I can do the research on whether or not its ok.

Thanks again!

Hi DVC,

I know you have moved to Seattle for a while but do you remember any sites where one can possibly find some silver coins? I did dig up some wheat pennies in a local park here near Sunnyvale. Your input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This thread was started nearly 3 years ago, when I still lived in California.
From what I've heard, most if not all the sites I had in mind are banned from detecting.
I'm not sure where one would find silver over more recent coins--perhaps places that are sorta "ghost towns", like the old Hamilton AFB north of SF?
Again, I'm not living there so I'm short on ideas--good luck!

My brother in law started out hunting in the bay area as they used to live in Stockton. He never found a whole lot though, mostly did it to get out of the house and get some exercise. I hear he has a lot better luck in North Dakota.
