For collecting bullion coins, I'd go for quantity :)

For collecting coins of numismatic interest, I like coins with sufficient quality to see the design nicely.

There should be some sort of organization to the collection(s) that will lead to research, or a future article, display, presentation, etc.

With that analogy my collection would be trashy.

I collect only Canada cents, large and small as well as varieities and commemoratives. On a 'very low budget' it took me a long time to collect one of each year. Now that I'm retired on a 'very low' pension' I am concentrating on replacing each coin with a much better quality one. This will probably take as long as it did first time around. So for me it's quality and I really enjoy the hunt.

For me I guess you should go for the quality coins you can afford and make your childred or grandchildred proud of when it becomes their turn to own every borrowed numismatic item that once being enjoyed by you. At least you will be doing a favor to them while enjoying to own it at present

I used to go for quantity, such as year runs, per type per year sets which cost me dear money and take up much valuable stacking space. Now I am trying to improve my collection to quality, that means good housing and perfectly safe (as good as it ca be) storage. I've improved into airtites, quadrums and coin capsules from 2x2's and very happy with my choice, even though it cost me a lot of money.

Hey Darrylx2 - I have 4 of the six 2006 varieties:
- no mint mark, No P, Non-magnetic, BU,
- Mint Mark, No P, Non-magnetic BU,
- Mint Mark, No P, Magnetic BU,
- P, Magnetic, PL

I haven't been able to acquire the 2006P Non-magnetic or the 2006 Magnetic. They have appeared on e-bay a few times but the successful buyers always had deeper pockets then mine.

I agree 100% Libertad!

Larryt, I hit the jackpot a few times. I purchased a 2006p magnetic cent along with two 2006 no mint mark no logo magnetics on ebay. I sent them for grading and the 2006p came back at ms 66 and both the 2006 no mint mark no logo magnetic ones came back at ms 65. My total cost was $130 for the purchase+ grading fees. I also stumbled across a 2006p non magnetic that I sent for grading and it came back ms 65. I love this cent! Its probably my favourite coin to date!

I like to kid myself that I am a numismatist. I reality, that is probably not the case, for two reasons. After looking at many posts that seem to reveal that there are many in the CCF who have more knowledge than me, and and because of that, secondly, I think that I still have a huge amount to learn.

So that means that numismatics, for me is about learning, and so the quality or quantity of coins in my collection is of secondary importance.

My collection which must be of about 3000 pieces, covers of all ages from the invention of coinage to modern times, and is of all cultures. They range in value from a few cents to a few thousand dollars each. Condition ranges from barely recognisable to pristine prefect. I also have many books that reflect the nature of my collection.
