the point that is scary is people see it in a PCGS holder and think this was toned when it was placed inside the slab and this is proof that is not always the c ASE

well a clacker holder the coin freely spins in the holder, that is why they are called clacker holders because trhe coin clacks inside the slab and it will rotate in the slab as well

That's disgusting. I would have paid more for the first coin than the colorized version. Thanks Bryan.

I have followed the posts at the NGC forums, and the guy has apologized and said he will get out of the coin business. Good riddance to him is all I can say. He was a RESPECTED member on the NGC forums and has more or less ruined his reputation. If ya cheat, sooner or later you gonna get caught. MM

He was a respected member of CU forums as well and there is 20 something pages so far about him because he was a trusted individual of the community and for him to do such a thing for a dollar or two just amazes people because respect takes a while to earn and to just throw it away over something like this is just stupid. He probably would have gotten away with it, he usually doesn't show the whole serial number on the slab (more focuses on the coin, just lets you see part of the numbers) but this time he showed the whole slab and someone checked his past purchases and matched the coins together. The bad part about it is when he got called on it, he lied and said he trades coins with a old dealer guy near him, where he trades blast white coins for toned coins and he may have traded him the coin white and 3 weeks later traded another white coin for it toned, then the next day he admitted to doing it himself and him being the only one involved with no dealer man existing. The only reason I am telling people here is because I want people to be aware that just because its in a PCGS slab doesn't mean its NT because it could have been in a old slab and been AT and then sent for reholdering (and we all know PCGS or any TPG doesn't really look at coins when they come in for reholdering, they just slap them in new plastic and ship them out, unless they were sent in for review). The one thing that really bothers me is if someone were to crack these coins out of the PCGS holders (in hopes of a upgrade) PCGS would send them back to the owner in a body bag for AT

This is a slightly off-topic, but this entire saga over there at CU illustrates why I'm never going to consider myself a "part" of that community - the degree of hogpiling those folks exhibit rivals anything I ever saw on a playground. Some of these people regularly spend six-figure sums of money on single coins, and they act with a level of maturity which wouldn't be tolerated at my dinner table.
There's a lot of information to be had there, but not much fellowship.

I definitely agree SuperDave, the only reason I even brought it over to this forum is because I know allot of people do not go there or to the NGC boards and I thought it was something that the people that buy specifically toned coins should be aware of

Oh, absolutely. The news that coins within a slab can be artificially toned, even if it's only rattlers, should be shouted from the rooftops. It ought to be on the front page of Coin World. Then again, in my world, only a fool buys a coin just for the toning, knowing that everyone and their brother is trying to artificially tone coins.

I like mine as white as they can get, I dont nor have I ever liked toning on a coin. That being said some of them toned coins that looks like you are on a LSD trip are eye catching but I would never pay 2000.00 dollars for a 70.00 coin if it wasn't toned. I always try to get them the cheapest I possibly can, I guess thats why most of mine are white coins

Bryan, speaking of toning, did you notice the reverse of one of the GSA's I sent you. Must have been an end roll, and if you notice the holder, it does not say "uncirculated" even thought it is. This I was told was because it had toning on it. That is the way they labeled them back during GSA packaging, even if it was only toning. it would not get the "uncirculated" label. I am curious as to what they will grade that one.... MM

Love me some white coins. Bryan, one of the raw morgans I will be sending you is toned. I will get it slabbed and see what premium I can get for it, so I can buy some lesser white morgans to replace it.
Don't like toned coins.

morganman, to tell you the truth I have opened the package and took the check out and then closed the box back up so they wouldn't get mixed up until time to ship them out, so I havent even looked at the coins what so ever. I will look at them when I am getting ready to box them up and I will label them so I will know who's is who's. I did get a email from Margaret that said they sent their coin and it should be here soon, so these will definately go out asap. I may be able to get them out before Monday if it gets here before then. I will keep everyone informed of when that happens

Good artical. With all the negative I have been hearing about toning the premium is sure to drop.
