I guess I should add that the price is good either way, even if a little bit damaged somehow.

I would certainly jump on that particular coin if I had the chance.

Id say buy a better one...wouldn't call that a great price because of how bad the scratches are...maybe average. Without the scratches it'd be a decent buy. Remember that the price guides don't necessarily reflect ebay prices to a T.

Buy it! Don't forget the 1867-1871 are also semi-keys but yes, the 1877 is King. Beware of counterfeits.

You can't go wrong at this price. It appears to be the "bold N" variety, the more common one.

thanks guys! I have purchased the coin for €25, aproximatly $33.
I normally don't pay that much money for a single coin, but I really like those Indian Heads... and how can I resist such a 'key' date. I will post some better pictures when it arrives in my mailbox :)

Hmm, I received my coin today... But I don't know if I should be that happy with it, because it appears to be more scratched than the seller's pictures! Maybe looks like even tampered pictures (or at least 3 out of focus pictures). I'm hoping the coin will be worth what I payed for it, and if I want to sell it eventually... if I can make my money back at minimum?

Anyway here are my own pictures, and look at the difference!
Usually I am not a picky guy, but I'm really wondering now. Because it's pretty beaten up. Even looks like it was done on purpase or something? Anyway, opinions are welcome.

They certainly did a good job of covering up the extent of the scratches.
Didn't see any of the horizontal scratches in the original pics.
You do see a lot of otherwise really nice coins that are "intentionally" scratched.
Someone at some time messing with a knife or whatever. I know of a 16d merc which would be G4,
but her face is all intentionally scratched, I think the guy wants like $450 for it.

But anyway it's up to you, if it is something that bothers you greatly, do you have an option to return it?
I think you have a case for the coin being misrepresented by the photo's. It's hard to say how easy you could move this
coin if you wanted to upgrade but I suspect you could at least break even.

thanks for the verification and the further explanation... Still thinking what I should do though, because it is pretty rare for this price. Especially here, I can't even find one on the Dutch market. And on international ebay, there are not so many. The cheapest are like $80 bucks, they are in worst condition then mine but have no scrathes.
Probably will hold on to it for a while, first collect more indian heads and maybe will resell it later.

I think you can get $20-$25 for it later. If you don't have it in your collection already I'd hold on to it. If you already have one I'd send it back. It's at least a hole filler for now, but I agree the lines are very distracting. Shame on the ebay seller. I wouldn't give him possitive feedback.

If you were here in the States, I'd say return it. There definitely was some deceptive selling going on. However in your situation I think I would hold on to it until when and if you can get a better one. I don't think you will have to much problem reselling it.

That sucks to see the big difference in the scratches. The seller definitely seemed to hide the extent of the scratches with the pics he posted. However, it seems your best bet may be to just hold onto it for now and possibly resell it later. I would much rather have a lower grade coin then one that is scratched to that extent, so perhaps a lower grade coin will really be an upgrade.
