I found out today that I won it in a British auction.

Awesome! We're both on a lucky streak. Today I got an email and found out I won the Nigerian lotto!

As for grade I agree with VF.

I'll base my post on the assumption that the coin is genuine; I really don't have the time tonight to research attribution. There are plain, lettered-edge and reeded-edge(!) varieties; if it has a reeded edge, hire a bodyguard.

It's a very nice looking planchet. Many are now known badly corroded. The reverse color is suspect, but I don't trust anyones photographs, not even my own.

I like VF20, and hope you paid at least $600 for it. Otherwise, the consignor is crying right now.
Rest in Peace

Thank you everyone for your grading and comments! It was attributed in the catalog as Sheldon 78 (common plain edge). It was listed near the end of the auction containing mostly high-quality British coins so I thought that there may not be much competition. I got it for 400 GBP, which is about $635.

Assuming it's genuine, I would call that a "fair price" at the very worst. Were it mine, I'd be looking to send it to NCS/NGC to see what they can do about the verdigris; this is definitely a coin which may be considered a solid long-term investment and worth a little investment.

An NGC "Fine Details" (improper cleaning) coin of similar detail went for $690 at Heritage a couple of months ago. I won't say that the NCS-->NGC route infers a greater likelihood of a non-Details grade, but it sticks in my head that it can't hurt.

Nice looking piece that is a solid VF. Might go VF+ too. You need to have it authenticated because it is worth over 1000USD if genuine and problem free.

I would attepmt to remove the (what appears to be) verdigris on the reverse asap.

The price seems about right and details are in the VF ballpark.

I wonder if BadThad's Verdi-Care product would safely remove the verdigris?

Details are consistent with an S78. Color and detail are exceptional it is high rarity I'd probably have gone as high as $1000 for it in an auction type setting.

EDIT: I'm going to go out on a limb and say XF-40 if that Verdigris is taken care of
