I think the coin is almost XF for detail, but they bumped it down due to very slight graininess in certain areas. I think you did pretty well if you're looking at this for a type set coin.

Shadow, I've considered cracking it out because it would be a great hole filler for my Dansco type album. But this one I think I'll leave in the PCGS holder. It's my first 1700's coin so I'm going to have it as a standalone.

I'll stick a more common date in that hole, like maybe an 1803.

Makes sense, and I was thinking the same thing for my type set...

I'm very picky about what goes in there and I've had a hard time with the two earlier large cents and the Seated Liberty dollar slots.

I agree the coin was probably "net-graded" a notch due to very slight porosity over high points of Liberty's hair. It's still a great-looking coin and early copper doesn't come cheap. I don't expect you'll have too many second thoughts about this one.

I went with a 1803 Large Cent and 1804 Half Cent for my 7070 album. They are allot easier to find in problem free condition

bherring1964, thank you for that! And thanks to the rest of you for your comments as well.

Where did you get that wealth of auction data? I go directly to ebay, Heritage and David Lawrence and search their archives... and you found way more than I did.

PCGS CoinFacts lists all available public auctions for all U.S. Coins. The list I posted was filtered by: 1798 Draped Bust Large Cents, 2nd Hair Style, 2010, PCGS, and VF. There were 7 public auction records available based on those critieria. It's a great tool. Let me know if you want more records. PCGS gave me a one year free membership to CoinFacts too - so I like it! I think it's about $100/yr to get CoinFacts.

Ah! So you have to be a member? Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll PM you the next time I want to look something up if I'm having problems searching manually.

I keep getting a this is a trial thingy on the side every time I go there. It used to only show generic information and as soon as you clicked a link it would tell you the subscription prices and stuff. Not sure if its because I joined PCGS that they gave me limited access or what but anyhow now I can click through the site. I do not look for information on their site enough to pay the 100 bucks a year and actually the information there should be available free in other places you just have to manually search for them

That's a great looking coin! I know they don't come cheap either - if you can even find one to buy.

I would have loved to have something just like that in my 7070 but didn't want to spring the funds. There's also the issue of cracking out as you mentioned.

Maybe someday...
