Could the date been printed wrong?

like this on ebay right now for $1.00?:

1844-CC-Liberty-Seated-With-Motto!-Yes-With-Motto

Nope. I'm sure they minted it just the way they wanted it, except it was minted, most likely, by, the Chinese.

This "coin" was not minted by the US Mint and definitely not in Carson City.

Sorry to be one of the bearers of bad news. Your coin is fake.

I bought it at a pawn shop !

Its only value is as a novelty. If you paid more than a couple dollars you should try to get your money back. It is a counterfeit and if the pawn shop dealer represented it as a genuine coin he defrauded you. If so, don't let him get away with it!

Sorry, but there is zero chance of that happening and zero chance that your coin is genuine or even silver. You might as well have purchased a 1798 Trade dollar or an 1805 Bust Dollar- two other fantasy counterfeits with impossible dates.

sorry to say but it is just a counterfeit coin that was minted with the wrong Reverse dies. the counterfeiters didn't know enough about coins to realize the motto, all they knew was the date is worth allot of money so they just used the motto reverse and didn't know it was wrong. If you purchased this coin you purchased a fake because there is no possible chance of it being authentic. This is one of the hardest parts of doing this, telling someone they either bought a counterfeit or telling them the coin in a basement slab is no where near the grade they purchased it at and no where near worth what they paid. The my father used to sit us in a circle and pass this coin around when we were kids and tell us how we would be able to retire when we got it is another one I hate to confront but it comes with the job of sharing the knowledge to further the hobby

I hope you didn't pay very much for it and I hope the dealer wasn't trying to pull anything over on you.

But, it is possible that he had been taken advantage of, too. I would like to think that he would have at least tried to find the "value" before he purchased it. But, he may have just paid spot for it thinking it was silver.

Who knows. You need to go talk to him.

Yes, your coin is fake as a three dollar bill and I hope you didn't pay a lot of money for it because I know that pawn shops do not take returns or give refunds. Did the dealer present the coin as a real dollar? If so, I'd be so angry. Pawn shop owners know better than that. All he would need to do is to look it up in a RedBook and he would know that the coin with that date, motto and mint mark is nonexistent.

Three dollar bills used to be a fairly common denomination back before 1862.

Hey folks, this thread got me curious about when Carson City was founded. According to Wikipedia, the year was 1858. The mint opened in 1870. 1844 is a far cry from those years ...

It's amazing how the Chinese keep discovering all these old U.S. coins that have never been seen in America. This is as bad as the "1824" Trade dollar with a date twice as large as normal that was on ebay in the past.

That is one of the main reasons it has 0 chance of being real, it having a Motto is another. This coin has absolutely zero going for it except the design is very close and could fool allot of people that aren't familiar with the series
