maine, I'm going to have to disagree in part.

obviously, the guy broke a rule or two on ebay, and of course you shouldn't pay a dime OVER the original shipping cost, but was it really that big a deal? does it really warrant everyone huffing and puffington about it? I've had plenty of incredibly obnoxious buyers and I was at their mercy bc of some of the absurdities of ebay policies.

secondly, how exactly is this a con game? that implies that he is intentionally trying to rip someone off. with the positive way in which he described it, he (the seller) certainly seemed to think it was ethical, so what we have is a misunderstanding...not a crook trying to rob someone as a good handful in this thread have interpreted it.

not everyone is a crook. some are just kind hearted fools.

Insurance is a profit center for usps. Either self-insure by taking the risk shipping naked, or tell the buyer the cost with insurance built in, there is no "option" to insure.

Don't even mention insurance. This amount is what we charge to get it to you, period.

It's a con game to offer insurance, just as it would be to sell a house and then ask the buyer if they want a roof.

oblaka, I understand your position...however, if I were the seller I would simply have checked to see that I was violating policy, then apologized. He didn't do that and that's why I think it's a con game. scubu summed it up nicely...it's the law.

HOT OFF THE PRESS! the ebay conversation (names and item info taken out) you have to read from bottom to top. This was after I left the first nuetral:
Also he never did leave feedback
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear him,

you cannot leave feedback on me because you haven't confirmed delivery? What does that have to do with me paying. I did everything on my end. Anytime I sell a product I always leave feedback the day the person pays. People like you wait until the buyer leaves feedback almost like its a bargaining chip. You are only further irrating me. I left feedback based on my experience.

Dear me,

You left me a neutral, I have not left feedback yet because I had not received confirmation that you received the coin and I have a guarantee and return policy on all my auctions. I can't leave feedback until I know you are happy. Again, almost 700 individual deals and you are the only one who left a neutral....what are the odds? You could have emailed me before posting the neutral, you didn't. I responded to your comment and, based on everyone I have dealt with, I am recommending they stay away from you because of your feedback to me. I deal with a lot of repeat buyers of coins as I list about once a year. They like my honesty, the no reserve starting at a dollar and my guarantee. I would worry if they bought or sold with you that you would give them a neutral or negative for something that is NOT an issue. They can choose and they can look at my feedback to make that decision.
I have also petitioned ebay and they informed me I can add anything I want with mutual agreement. You had the choice to say no, you said no and I shipped without insurance. Yet you still needed to post a neutral?
You can change your feedback or withdraw it, you have that option and I sent the request to you already.

Dear him,

Well Why am I being put under fire here. You never even left feedback after I paid for the item. Too many ebayers like you never leave feedback until after the purchaser leaves feedback. I completed my part of the transaction with out any faults yet I did not receive feedback.

Dear me,

It was optional and clearly listed in the item description of the auction. The value of the coin warranted it, regardless of what you won it for. I have sold more than 50 coins for over $1K and have offered insurance on all, only two people said no and one of them drove 300 miles to pick it up (1892CC morgan). Nobody ever complained or left anything but positive. I am not a dealer, I collect and go to yard sales and auctions. I then offer what I don't want as no reserve auctions. What you did to me makes me want to stop that practice and put reserves on each. The reserve on that coin woulve been at least $800, maybe $1K, then I could pay the shipping and ins. But you would not have a key date morgan for $400 either.
The seller is allowed to add or subtract to the ebay invoice, you know this. I asked you first only because of the value. If the post office would have lost it, it would be on them and me (with a tracking number) but your money would be tied up in paypal for months while the usps did their investigation. There is a reason I have 700 deals and all are perfect. You are the only one who ever left less than positive.

Dear him,

if you show me in ebay rules where it is ok to email a buyer after the auction has ended and ask them for additional money I will pull my feedback

Dear me,

Neutral feedback? WH?, I explained insurance was an option, I do not make $$ on it, it is for your piece of mind. I have done 600 deals on ebay and NEVER received anything less than POSITIVE. WHat is your problem? Why did you not try to work it out?
INSURANCE IS NOT AGAINST POLICY if it is added to the INVOICE as a Seller add and all above board. You need to get your facts straight!

Also though it was interesting he said he went to yard sales and found these coins worht thousands. His compltede listing in the past month had about $20k in roughly 30 transactions so I also emailed this:
Dear him,

a nuetral feedback IS NOT NEGATIVE! it doesn't bring your account down. You are bothering me!
you tell me you go to yard sale and garage sales to find these coins. I have never seen a garage sale with with a coin worth more than $10. you seem to be finding NGC MS70 $50 gold eagles. Just please take this as my last message:
A nuetral feedback is just how I experienced my auction
A nuetral feedback does not hurt your 100% positive
I was happy with my coin
I am not happy with your emails to me
Now that you know I have the coin and I am happy with it we will see how honest your are (my feedback). You can not leave me feedback and that is fine it will only prove what I have been saying. Have a good day. Again I like the coin

Post him this...its from ebays policies

Can I add insurance charges to my invoice?
You can't charge a separate fee for insurance, but you can incorporate any insurance costs into your item's price or handling cost. Whether or not you choose to insure the item, you still need to make sure your item arrives as described.

A con game? For offering the option of insurance or not? The point is that he offered the option

No, the point is that there is no option, and he's asking if you want to pay extra for something you are entitled to for free. That's a con.

How much is a gallon of milk? $3. OK, give me two gallons. Would you like $2 jugs for those? What if I don't? Then we hand you two jugs of milk for $6, instead of $10.

Brett-

That needs to be a sticky somewhere. Please provide the URL if you have it.

That's why I say not to even allow insurance and who pays it to become a topic of discussion. If a seller wants to go naked or pay for insurance, that's up to him. If he wants to pass it to the buyer in his shipping fees, just do it. Either way, the seller has to deliver or refund.

your not allowed to charge for insurance? Wow, I must not be following ebay now. Back in the day, insurance was an extra.

well, in light of these emails, i'll have to retract my position on the matter a bit.

while politely asking for insurance, even in the face of the ebay rule opposed to it, is not entirely eggregious, the way he handled his communication with you paints him as not necessarily a con, but certainly a jerk. he should have just accepted the 6 dollar loss and gone about his business.

Not sure why not have all sellers on ebay list whatever they want under the item for shipping. They could have a standard list such as the following and it would be noted the purchaser pays all fees:
Please circle all that applys.
1. USPS shipping in whatever it fits into
2. FED-X and whatever they charge and fits into.
3. UPS and whatever they charge
4. Insurances and you pay as noted for amount of purchase.
5. Life insurance in case your not alive when it is delivered.
6. Hand delivered by me and you pay air fair.
7. Or terms as you stipulate.
8. No returns without an armed guard
9. Any returns require you to pay all shipping fees, restocking fees
and/or other fees as I so demand.
Such a standard list would stop all the necessities of feedbacks too.

It also states in ebay's rules something to teh affect that all fee's should be incorparated in the shipping price. All a seller really has to do is offer more shipping options if they want to add insurance. IE
1. Shipping First class $3.00
2. Shipping first class with insurance $7
3. Shipping priority mail $5
4. Shipping priority with insurance $9

Amazon.com doesn't ask you to pay for insurance after you checkout. They simple ensure the item gets to you no matter what
