I've not had the chance to view either of these holders. But, my question is do both offer a protective cover. Or do the coins stay open to air?

albums have protective covers over the coins, folders have coins open to air.

Thanks! Those albums can get expensive. Any suggestion who offers the best price online. Or maybe I'd be better to go to a coin shop. Live about 45 min from one, so I do a lot of online searching and shopping.

I have been getting Dansco, because I like their options for what coins are included (e.g. with or without proofs, divided or not into different subsets of a series, etc.), but I actually don't care for the brown/gold color scheme, and I hate that ugly, overused, brush-script font. They seem the most future-proof, so I like them for current series. After all, it's about the coins, not the font on the album. If I decide to get the really expensive coins in a series (e.g. 1909-S VDB), am I going to put them in an album though, risking exposure and contact marks from the sliders? Or will I write "1909-S VDB" on a common wheat for the album and keep the pricey one safe in its slab? I always imagined if I started putting together a collection of classic coins (I'd like to collect Mercury dimes or Peace dollars down the road) I would get a different kind of album, but then it wouldn't match the ones I already have. *shrug*

When I get my 1909-S VDB it will be put into my Dansco album. I bought the album to hold my collection. It would drive me crazy not having the coin in there!
I have been using Dansco albums for over 26 years now. I have never had a problem that would generate concern about putting a key date coin in one.

Thanks Jbuck... I hadn't heard of that site, so went to take a look and saw some very good prices of albums compared to what I've seen so far. Also, nice to know that Dansco holds up over the years.

You are welcome.
Yes, I have been very pleased with my Dansco albums. I must add that where you keep them is very important to your success. A clean environment with a stable temperature and low humidity is best for all coins, regardless of the album used. In my opinion, all problems with albums can be attributed to improper storage.

I have been reading about keeping coins in a dry environment. Where do you all keep your coins? I've been considering putting them in a gun safe we have and then using the dessicants to make sure they stay dry because the safe is in an area of our house that sometimes gets damp. Or if I leave them in a well controlled temperature environment in another area of the house which is dry, I start getting paranoid and think this is when someone is going to come in and steal them because they would be easy to spot.

Hmm interesting point about not having the 09SVDB in the album, I think I'll make that a new thread.

Desiccants will help, but remember to maintain them as they do have a saturation limit. You can replace or recharge them (putting them in the oven is often the recommendation).
Many will also suggest putting the albums into individual Ziploc type bags, pushing out as much air as possible.
A building, house, bank, etc. with climate control (HVAC, central air, dehumidifier, etc.) is a plus. Keeping them in a place that has the window open a lot would be bad, in my opinion. You definitely do not want to keep them in a garage, attic, unfinished basement (i.e. not climate controlled), or tool shed.

main reason for me having danscos vs. whitman is all the extra slots whitman puts in; 55 DDO, 72 DDO, and I think maybe some others

I have always been a Whitman folder man. My dad was a Whitman folder man, and so am I.
Dansco can come along and try to pretend they're good, but we all know that Whitman is the only true coin album.
But you know... I did buy a Dansco 7070 recently... and the coins sure look nice in it... brown with the gold leaf... OHHH! Who am I trying to kid! I love Dansco! Yay Dansco! You've got it all over Whitman! My Whitman albums are for little kids and besides they're falling apart! But.... they're a vestige from my childhood! I don't know what to do! I love them both! AHHHH!

Quote: I don't know. I have had some Danscos where I have had to push pretty hard to get the coin in. I f your interested in using Whitman Albums talk to justcarl, I think he must work for Whitman or get a commission for every album sold! Sort of like that old song called Charlie Brown, why is everyone picking on me? I USED to prefer Whitman Albums, not Folders, for a long, long time. If you look back in time Whitman was and still is a MidWest organization. Dansco is in the far West, California area. This means that way back in the 40's through the 70's, almost any coin item for collecting was Whitman if you lived in the MidWest and even the East. I'm in the MidWest and never even heard of any coin company except Whitman until the 80's. NOW, due to Whitman being resold several times, now owned by Harris, it appears the quality has dropped excessively on almost all coin collecting supplies while they consentrate on books. On the back of their USMint Albums it now states made in China. Whitman Albums have tendencies to have the coin cover pages come loose, coin slots are either to small or to large. their still one decent good point is the availability of almost any type of Album you want to create and many blank pages for that too. I am now also slowly changing to Dansco but mostly due to getting all my Albums free.

If you look into the Search tab for this forum for safes, you should find many posts about the pros and cons for using a safe. Putting your coins in a safe is a safety precaution for theft, not preservation of the coins. Don't forget every time you open a safe, all the air falls out, new air full of STUFF goes in. During a fire if a safe gets hot, all the plastic in there melts and any Albums use plastic slides. Regardless of where you keep your coins, keeping moisture from them is the most important thing. If you use Albums, just put them in Zip Lock Plastic Bags. I put all mine in thoes and the best Albums are in 2 of them. And of course the best ones are in a banks safe deposit box too.
