I tried the "shot-gun" effect of collecting everything from everywhere, for a while. Enjoyed every minute of it, but it just got too overwhelming for me. Between the discouragement of having so many mediocre coins, coupled with a life-altering sickness, I decided to re-approach collecting with some specific goals and structure. I sold off a large portion of my collection (including to several board members here), and now have a defined collection that is much more enjoyable. My primary collection is the coinage (and currency) of Yugoslavia and the former republics that were part of YU (Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro). I also have an idle secondary collection of the modern coinage of the post-USSR states of the CIS. I still have parts of my older collection that I am reluctant to get rid of, but eventually they will be pared away, including my Canada, UK, Philippines, Indonesia, and a few eastern European countries that I am still holding on to.
The last month or so has been a hectic stage for me, with work taking over my life, but it looks like things are slowing down and I will be able to commit more time to collecting and enjoying coins again.

I collect only U.S. coins. Mainly 3CN and Barber dimes. I don't know much about foreign coins, but if one really caught my eye and the price was good I would pick it up!  I will occasionally get something other than the two mentioned types, but right now I am working hard to get them complete. However, I am to the point where the only ones I need are not cheap and the occasional commem or Mercury dime gets bought just to add to my collection! |

vbekarevich, if you are willing to wait, I think I will be travelling around Asia next year January. If that's the case, I will keep a set of coins for you. I will post a note when that happens for that the rest of the forum members here can get Asian coins for face value  |

Mainly I buy what I think will have a good chance of going up in value that I can afford to buy.

I collect anything that crosses my path. I have been thinking about starting a theme though. I like the idea of collecting as many coins as I can with Deers, antelopes, Mooose etc on them. steve |

Right now if the coin is Minted by the US Federal Government and is either silver or gold, I am collecting it. Specifcially getting ASE right now from 86-2006, BU. Then getting 2000-present PCGS MS69 ASE. Then it will be 86-Present 1/10th $5 gold Ealges. I have my collecting cut out for atleast the next year or two. Edited by RangerXLT8

I think that one should focus on one country or region that in the past belonged to one country or kingdom, it helps to know its history. As for my self, I am very much interested in Egyptian coins.

Hello all,
I am new to this group this being my first post.
A number of years ago I started collecting ancient Roman and Byzantine coins. I've branched out now to collecting large silver thaler coins from the 17-19th centuries and German empire 3 and 5 mark coins. I also have a small collection 8 reale coin from Spain and South America.

I don't think any kind of a systemis actually necessary for collecting. As it is impossible to collect each and every coin on the face of earth, I find it impossible to collect every coin with a dog, a tree or a king/queen on it. So what's the difference  I liked Snooba's criteria. The list pretty much sums it up :) |

I agree w/ Renal that some collection by theme, like all coins w/ animals has a high difficult to be completed, probably not as all coins of the world anyway quite hard.
So far my contribution in which coin I collect:
1st all Italian coins from 1861 (Italian kingdom born)
2nd all circulating euro coins from 2002 (actually year mint start in 1999)
3rd world coin by type in 19th and 20th centuries w/ special attention to US, Switzerland, Vatican and San marino.
Of course I know 3rd choice is quite impossible to complete, but anyway it is a good way to collect coins and if you like to learn much nore on the world thru coins

I collect by theme, I have collected for years and sold a lot of what I collected to continue along different lines. I always collect Beauty. My collections are of Lions on Coins and Medals, Cars on coin, and bare Breasted ladies on Coins and a few medals. But my Primary theme right NOW is Victoria Medals from 1837 to 1901. A few years from now if I am still around it may be something else. But after all these years, I feel theme collecting is my favorite type of collecting. If you don't think Lions on coins is a challenge, go check the mintage on some of them,,,,I have some with less than 100 mintage and many with less than 1000 mintage. Edited by DaBoz

I collect any US Silver or US copper/clad and anything that has eye appeal. well that about all ,but I will buy a deal in a heartbeat!!!
