As Shadow said, go to coins.ha.com then scroll down close to the bottom. On the left hand side, there is a "Virtual Collection" link. Hit that, then select Silver Dollars. Once you compare yours to the image on the site, you'll see the difference.

Welcome to the forum.

thanks for all the replies, this is most probably the most helpful forum I have joined :)

well looks like this coin is as good as an iPad rip off

as this coin has been kept for some time, what do you think I should do with it ?

report it to the authorities, or use it as a paperweight ?

If it's made of silver, it would at least have value for the metal. Will a magnet stick to it?

It's a cast fake and your grandpa probably knew it. I'd have kept it, too. It hardly means his whole collection is bad.

That's the first Liberty I've seen in dreadlocks.
For some reason, the forgeries put a scowl on her face.

A genuine 1799 dollar for comparison:

That eagle on the reverse looks like a duck, or maybe a platypus...

I believe I see a bit of reeding and if so, that is a sure sign of a fake regardless of design differences. Circulating US silver dollars were not reeded until 1840.

At least you didn't pay anything for it! Folks can lose thousands of dollars on fake coins.
