Nice coins.
As I was reading this thread I was thinking how I am not the only one, early this week
I bought a 1882 S at a local coin shop. It really caught my eye with proof like surfaces.
After getting it home, I started seeing the hits and started wondering if I made a mistake.
I paid $80 for it. After reading the comments here, I feel a little better.

I really like your pics showing the reflection of the print ... good job.

I believe these places sell these prooflike coins raw because they won't slab. Some would say dip them but then what do you have? The spots make me wonder. In order to be DMPL they need to have the black and white contrast, these do not. I do agree they LOOK nice.

Determining Prooflike and DPL characteristics of a coin is an objective process, requiring specific conditions to be met. It's not a judgement call.

If your coin can reflect 12pt newspaper type sharply and clearly from every point in the fields of the coin both obverse and reverse at a distance of 4", it's PL. If that reflectivity is equally clear at a distance of greater than 6", it's DPL. Note, this standard seems to be tightening over the last few years; you might want to use 8" as the defining distance for DPL.

That's all there is to it. If barryg's coin reflects both faces like it does in the pic he provided, it's an easy PL.

All right, I am officially obsessed with these coins! I realize I'm not exactly getting a "bargain" buying them off APMEX, but I keep checking back every so often and whenever they have another small batch for sale I've been buying them. I now have 19 of them and am looking to buy one more so I can have a complete roll of 20. And then I'll stop, I swear...

@SuperDave - is that the standard for all denominations? I have a Mercury dime I would describe as "proof-like" (and it has an NGC star designation) but reflections can't be seen at that distance because the concavity of the fields causes too much distortion. I have seen PL designated dimes, but I can't imagine they'd ever have flat enough fields to meet those standards, even if they had a perfect mirror finish.

I really like your New Orleans Branch Mint PL!

Your Philly is nice as well. I would send them in to ANACS for certification. If they had an issue, ANACS would still slab em, and ID the issue.

I have an 1888 MS63 PL Morgan for my 7070, and it definitely draws attention with the reflective fields, having a different designation, along with my FS Jefferson, FB Mercury, MS64 star Walker, MS64 Red Indian cent, FH Standing Liberty, etc... (sorry, got carried away)

Very attractive coins, if the other dollars you purchased are their equal you'll have an impressive set. Your photographs are excellent!

These coins need to be kept in individual holders to preserve the PL (or DMPL) surfaces. If you put them together in a roll you will add nicks and scratches which will reduce their grade and hurt the potential value.

Hmmmm... Good point. Do you think it would help if I separate each coin with a piece of tissue or something?

It will help to not put them in rolls at all! Put them in air-tites or something.

I cannot answer with certainty, but I'd suspect you're correct in that standards would tend to relate to the coin itself.

Yeah, but that kinda defeats the purpose of trying to amass 20 of them, doncha know...

If you are intent on rolling them, put them in air tites and roll the air tites. Do not let them come in contact with each other....

I've got a bunch of Lighthouse capsules available, but I don't think they make rolls wide enough to carry them.

Ah well, guess I'll just have to abandon my goal of having a roll of 20. Of course, that does mean that I am now free to keep buying more of them, right?
