I am remote access and can't post web links. But if you search on London free press July 29, 2008 there is a story about shiny, thick counterfeit toonies jamming vending machines. A CBC story on oct 6, 2006 refers to the break up of the counterfeiting ring. Try searching on counterfeit toonies.

Did a bit of research and could only find info on counterfeits of newer coins bearing the new queen effigy, nothing on 2001s. The mystery continues I guess...

An impaired proof is a proof coin that's been damaged (typically because somebody spent it).

Does anyone here collect counterfeit coins that they have found. It seems like that would be an interesting thing to collect. I assume that they would have no value just collector appeal. Anyone?

Prana, There must be a few people out there who collect them. Several months ago, I saw a 1946c 5 cent coin from Newfoundland on ebay. It was labelled as counterfiet, but still sold for $25.00 or so. One of the best counterfiets I've ever seen. I hope the buyer wasn't planning to market it as the real thing....

It is actually illegal to sell, or even own, Canadian counterfeit coins. If anyone here does collect counterfeit coins, you would be wise not to broadcast that fact...

I know that protocal for banks is to keep the bill once received and call the police. Meanwhile places like Tim Hortons often have a counterfiet bill in a frame near the drive through window so the employees can view incoming bills so as to prevent fraud. Is this the same for coins?

Interesting but I wonder if collecting a few varieties would really get you in trouble. Sounds like a good excuse as per section 450. Either way no need to share if you do. Thanks

I don't think my coin is counterfeit, but who knows? Anyone think this could be the case here? Or is this one worth a little more research? The only info on fake 2$ coins I found was around 2006.

I think it is also illegal to own or trade counterfeit Newf coins as well. They are still legal tender in Canada I think.
