Thanks for all the replies here. I went ahead and emailed the buyer stating I could not ship the coin and also canceled the transaction. Received an email back from the buyer stating that they understood the problem with this and they were fine with canceling the transaction. When it is re-listed I will make sure to state in the description that the coin will be shipped within the United States only. No exceptions to this whatsoever.

In addition to stating it in the description, be sure to select the option that you ship to the US only. If you do not actually change the settings on the auction, you could be expected to complete a transaction outside the US, even though your description states that you don't ship overseas. This could leave you open to negative feedback and sanctions from ebay. When you select the option to not ship worldwide, bids from people outside of the US will be blocked.

You're lucky the buyer was so cooperative and I'm glad for that, but I agree not to ship things that valuable out of the country except for maybe Canada and the UK. If you must, you can just label it 'numismatic items' on the customs form. The prohibitions on coins probably weren't intended to include collectibles, but they fall under the blanket umbrella (the purpose of the rules was probably to prohibit exporting modern money or money laundering or something). I've shipped several times to Australia and had no problems when I put that on the customs form.

It is sad that the actions of a few people ruin things for everyone. As a seller it only takes one loss to make the decision that shipping internationally is not worth the effort. For those of you who haven't been burned or haven't heard about this here's how it works.
Items shipped internationally leave the US & go into customs at the destination country at which point there is no longer any way to track the item. The buyer subsequently makes the claim that the item was not received. It's immaterial as to whether or not customs lost the item or the buyer is commiting fraud as the end result is the same.....the seller loses money.

As already declared by Gecko, I do also get sad when reading here how reckless it is to dare and accept shipping overseas. I have bought myself a large part of my collection in the US, including some high priced single coins and also several lots. Both from ebay and from professional dealers. I have never had any problems receiving my items, except for a 5 buck item I doubt it has been sent - I have been too late to launch the "buyer protection" and got never refunded. I understand that when you are dealing with US coins, there is no real interest to sell overseas as most buyers live in the US or maybe Canada. But when trading with (better) world coins, you are definitely loosing money. I am regularly getting tears into the eyes when seeing the final price of French coins that are not being sent overseas - sometimes not even half of what I would have bid. I am far from paying cat price. I have seen silver lots go for around spot price where one single coin was worth much more than the lot. I would have bid accordingly. I am also aware that the postal service of some countries are all but reliable and sending coins over there is like gambling. Maybe one final word. I am selling my doubles on ebay. The only mail so far that has been lost in the mail went to the US...

I have never had any problems sending or receiving coins from overseas. I've sent to Turkey, USA, Canada, England and many others. I have done this through my contacts within the CCF. It appears that many in the CCF don't have a high opinion of other CCF members. Or were you just talking about your problems with ebay and people you don't know?

I made a purchase of over $350 from a CCF member. I paid in $50 lots over several weeks before the coins were sent because he was a CCF member. I bought the coins sight unseen, because he was a CCF member. I accepted the fact that he had mailed the coins, because he was a CCF member. If the coins had not arrived, I would not have sought restitution from him, because I accept the fact that he had kept his part of the bargain and he would not have lied to me because he was a CCF member. I have no problems if you wish to limit your market to the unknown people on ebay within the US. Just know that there have been a large number of coins that I would have bought from you, sight unseen, paid up front and without hassles because you are a CCF member.

Thanks for all the replies. Everything is settled at this point and I have relisted the coin on ebay. If anyone wants to take a quick look at it the item number is 200651540552 and you are more than welcome to place a bid of course.

for ccf I would allow an international posting but for normal ebay I wouldn't as I have been stung so many times but I will always look at whats best value for the person too so If it is better I send a set than a single coin I am happy too as long as it is what the person recieving wants

Quote: It appears that many in the CCF don't have a high opinion of other CCF members. I can't speak for anyone else but my comments were directed towards ebay sales. I have sent things internationally to CCF members as trades and/or gifts. However, I'm not willing to ship items I sell on CCF internationally. This is not a reflection of how I feel about members that live elsewhere.....it's a matter of how I feel about the shipping process & my perception of the hassle involved with customs forms. Quote: If the coins had not arrived, I would not have sought restitution from him, because I accept the fact that he had kept his part of the bargain and he would not have lied to me because he was a CCF member. That's the type of response I would expect from a fellow CCF member & is one of the many things I like about this forum. The problem is that as a CCF member I would feel obligated to issue a refund irregardless of what the buyer wanted.

I've shipped stuff overseas on other message boards(not coin related) and never had a problem. But I won't ship overseas on ebay, not a chance. On other boards, it was to people who were long time members with good reputations and people that I have known and consider friends or dealt with before. On ebay I'll only ship inside the US, to many scammers on there. A couple years back I had some cards up on ebay, this guy kept pestering me to ship to him(can't remember where he was from now)eventually he asked me if I would ship to an address in the states if he won, said it was a relative of his, I agreed. He won, I sent it out priority mail with delivery confirmation and emailed him the DC#. A day after it was delivered, the guy emails me saying the package didn't show up. I emailed him back with the tracking number again showing that it was delivered to the address he provided. He never responded back.

I frequently ship things overseas on CCF and have never had a problem here. But on ebay I only very rarely sell things internationally, because as others said the seller protection Paypal/ebay offers is not worth its salt internationally. I once got burned selling $150 worth of goods to Ireland, and called up paypal once they placed a hold on my account. I was told by the Paypal offical that they agreed that I shipped the item, but that since the customer claimed it didnt arrive I was still liable. I've been researching suing paypal in small claims court but it looks like my chances of winning are only about 50%.
