Hi, I bought this cent on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...56&rd=1&rd=1

Its an L penny they were saying. I bought it since I needed for set. I feel stupid can an person check it and explain to me what is the Diffance between the 1864 cent and 1864 l penny.

I am confused when they talking about ribbon and the l showing. I need to learn these things since I am building an penny set. Later I will need help on the 1858 small leters and large letters cents.

On ebay I been looking at all 1864 pennys to try see what they are talking about. I am stumped on this thing.

Thanks Chevrolet454ss

They are talking about the headress ban, the L is the first letter for liberty which is on the ban of every Indian Head cent.

It seems to have the pointed bust, also a design change with the addition of the L.
I's say yes, but the pictures are very small.

Good morning all. The "L" on the ribbon is a tribute to the designer of the series, James Longacre, and appeared for a short time in 1864.

Here's a closeup of the "L" and a description of the coin. The 1864-L has a distinctly sharp bust, so they are distinguishable from other 1864's even on worn examples.

Isn't it also true that the last feathers position on the head dress is a give away. I noticed the feather can be pointing between the C-A in America on the 1964. Where as the feather points between the I-C on the 1964L. Is this true for all 1964s?

OrDirtDevil,

I looked at several examples and the last feather points to the same general direction in each at about 10:00 on the 'C'. Do you have pics of the lower-pointing feather?

Maybe I need glasses. I dunno. But that L doesn't look like an L to me. It's really difficult to make out.

Hello chevrolet454s,
It sure looks like the narrow bust point, but hard to tell from this small photo:
Here is the location of the "L" on one of my coins, be sure to look the date over good, there are numerous double dates in that year.

Post a larger pic if possible.

Wow,

That's helps me to figure out the 1864l cent by daveyn. Its tough looking at that coin to to learn about them. Coin facts website was hard to see photos. I think I need to buy magnifier to help me see coins better. My camera is not all great on super small items.
Thanks again chevrolet454ss

No wonder it didn't look like an L to me. It's sideways.
