I several coins left by my great-grandfather. the coins have a ford emblem with the phrase "thirty years of progress" on one side, and an emblem vith a v8 on the back with the years 1903-1933 next to it. I know next to nothing about coins and could not find any information about this coin on the internet and was wondering if someone here could tell me exactly what they are and if they have any value.

edit- I found one picture of it online with a little bit of information however I was wondering if someone could tell me anything more about it

Ford Motor Company advertising coin commemorates 30 years since its founding - 1903-1933. Front of coin reads "V8 of Progress" and "Ford 1903-1933" on the reverse. (Stock number 003wf0417TY) $40.00

Just one place I found mention of it.

i have found many references to the coin shown in that link, however the ford emblem on my coin is different, it doesn't have a car grill on it, just a ford logo inside an oval.

Congratulations, your coin is called a "So-Called Dollar" minted exclusively to be handed out at Ford's 1933 N.Y. auto exposition! I believe it's aprox 1-1/8 diameter. I've not seen your type on ebay or or available by performing a google search of 1933 ford coin "30 years of progress" so therefore yours could be of higher value or rare. Test the waters with ebay and maybe send one of the best coins to NGC for grading. The common larger 1933 progress Ford coin with grill is NGC HK-465 and the 1934 Ford auto exposition coin is HK-466. Do not clean your coins.

Anyway, Ford Motor Company's brass coins were created for the 1933 Detroit and New York Auto Shows, NOT for the world's fair in Chicago. Presumably, these coins were handed out for free during the shows.

The Detroit Show opened on October 21, 1933 in the Detroit Convention Hall. Its theme was to celebrate the 'Thirty Years of Progress' that the Ford Motor Company had accomplished since its founding. It was a free show and was held over for a second week. Over 1.1 million people came to see the free entertainment. The Detroit brass coin has the 1933 car grille with Ford script in the middle and 1903 and 1933 on one side. The obverse has the V-8 in the center and the words Thirty Years of Progress around the edge. It is approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

The New York 'Thirty Years of Progress' show opened on December 9, 1933, at the Port Authority Building and ran for one week. This New York Ford Exposition brass coin is only 1 1/8 inches in diameter and has the Ford Oval with the words Thirty Years of Progress around the edge on one side and the V-8 and 1903 and 1933 on the other.

This is a 1937 Coronation medal struck by Ford Motor Co. of Canada (Windsor Ontario) using the same copper alloy as the new V8 engine.

hey chrycopaul, I have nearly the same 50-year ford coin. the difference is on the back it says "50 years forward on the american road 1903-1953." and under that, arched along the bottom of the coin above the stars it says Ford Motor Comapny. do you know what the difference means and do you know if these coins are worth anything?
