Don't remember the reason; something about how the planchets were prepared? This example shows the dark and drab coloring I'd consider natural for a toned Peace dollar. Such coins seem pretty scarce but don't seem to attract the high premiums that rainbow-toned Morgans do. Report this Post to the Staff

panzaldi Bedrock of the Community United States 18627 Posts	Posted Today 10H 22M ago toning progression is as follows 1. yellow (gold) 2. Brown 3. Blue 4. Red 5. Green 6. Purple 7. Black what you are seeing is a typical advanced stage of toning where the majority of the toning has moved into the Purple/Black range. the other indicator of genuine toning is the smooth transition between colors which we see here. TPG's love heavy toning, for me this is the reason I never went for toned coins. I'm not a fan of it once it moves into the black range. Report this Post to the Staff
