This one is a fairly good cast counterfeit. Weight is 26.8g. But it shows some very strong die clash so putting it up as an example of a bad one with a nice error. 1879-CC Morgan dollar - strong die clash - counterfeit   |

Thanks for the kind comments! Sometimes it seems like there are more issues with counterfeits than real coins. Certainly there are more strong doubled die counterfeits than on actual coins. I try to spend at least a little time looking at the coins other than just verifying they are bad, and see some really odd stuff on them.

Thanks for sharing. Mintmark size & placement seems to be an Achilles heel for some counterfeiters.

Very cool and not cool all at the same time.... So I skimmed through all the cc clashes for all cc's and saw nothing like this and then skimmed through all clashes for Morgan dollars and came up with nothing. I assumed that the counterfeiter used an existing coin to make the clashed version but have come up empty, which is even more concerning, in my opinion, if they created their own clash. I did not do a deep dive, just skimmed, thinking it would really stand out, there is some very heavy and unusual clash marks in the lower area of the coin you do not typically see and figured it would stand out when I did a quick search. Maybe someone more versed in Morgan clashes will chime in, Zurie or someone of the sort. Thanks for posting though, not just this but all of your posts, I always enjoy and learn with them.  -makecents-

I also did a quick search of ebay coins and didn't see anything quite like this. My original thought was that they would have used a regular 1879 dollar and added the mm to make the mold so probably somewhere out there is a dollar coin with this big clash. |

Wow is all I can say   What I would do is take this counterfeit to a jeweler and have them XRF test this for metal content; I suspect it has no silver or just a trace of a coat of it. |
