Here is an abused little token that was in an assorted coin box I acquired. I haven't seen one like it before and I hope a CCF member can tell me about it. It seems unusual in that it is dated on both sides and the ship motif on the reverse also seems uncommon. Too bad it is kinda beat up. I wonder if it has a clipped planchet (an error) or was chewed on during circulation. At least it is mostly free of corrosion!

Looks like it might be the first Union ironclad, USS Monitor.

Although a relatively common variety in comparison to other CWT's, these Monitor tokens are far fewer in number than say 1909-S VDB's or 1916-D dimes. The ironclad history, a ship pictorial, enhances the popularity of these pieces and drive the price above what other CWT's of comparable "rarity" now fetch. Whereas the typical CWT R-1's are trading in the $15-$20 range in VF-XF condition, the common Monitor pieces are commanding two to three times that amount. While there are probably folks who would pay $25 for the subject token, the damage is so severe that most CWT collectors would be hard-pressed to pay much more than $10 for this one ... Its value lies more in the history than in the condition.

I love to see coins and tokens like the one you posted. I'd rather have a beat up, circulated coin over an overpriced BU any day of the week. At my local coin shop they have an entire tray of this stuff. Some of it is over priced and some of it isn't. Fun stuff thought.
