Details look VF maybe VF+. The coin has been cleaned and/or over-dipped and hopefully will re-tone a bit over time.

I will disagree with BH1964 to the tune of about 5 grading points; I think strict details make this an XF coin. Agreed on the surfaces, though - this one ain't original and I'm afraid that under different lighting it'll look brushed pretty harshly.

The problem with my picture taking abilities, at present, is that they do not show a lot of the original luster in spots on the coin. Quote:

If so, I cannot find these on this coin as I was originally concerned about that. However, I also admit I am not knowledgeable about such things and appreciate any info I can get. |

I am seeing what might be evidence of this running from northwest-southeast on the obverse, and from northeast-southwest (closer to vertical) on the reverse. Reverse is more pronounced. |

Thanks SuperDave, I see what you mean. When I get this in hand next time I will have to look at these areas again. I hope it is just my lack of photography skills/lighting (if that is even a possibility in this case).

It's very much a possibility that lighting is the culprit - it can exaggerate what we'd call a "cabinet rub" to the point where it would look like brushing. Your best bet is to get the coin into direct sunlight, and use your calibrated eyeballs to make a determination.

The obverse on this coin is XF details for sure. the reverse is more like VF details, but could be the result of a soft strike. Definitely cleaned though. If this one were mine I'd put it in a coin envelope and let it re-tone.

Is the missing base of the second T on the REV indicative of a weak strike ?

This is an O-112 variety. The weak T is characteristic of the variety, as is the solidly-joined AME in AMERICA. I'm currently looking at a PCGS MS62 at Heritage which shows the same weak T, as well as the same relative softness of the lower reverse.

Thanks for that info SuperDave. I like being able to specifically classify coins. So could you also be able to enlighten me as to how a weak strike impacts overall grading? If this one looks VF on the reverse, is it truly a VF considering the weak strike? Also, where could I get a list of the classifying markers for this coin just b/c I am nosy and want to learn more?  |
