I bought some Two Cent Pieces which showed up the other day and looked too good to not be worked on, but don't have a real eye for what colored coins would look like.

I've thought of soaking in acetone to see if there were any changes to color thus confirming they have been doctored. I heard somewhere 80% of the Two Cent Pieces have been colored, but don't know if this really true.

Does anyone have any experience with such and is it a good idea to try the acetone on these type coins?

I would like to see a picture of what you are describing before recommending anything for you to try. I have never used acetone on a copper coin so I can not suggest that to you myself
Rest in Peace

Not sure what you mean by the coloring. If sort of a painted type coloring, might be easily removed with Acetone. If it is a toned coin from normal air and humidity, a different thing. Just got to have some photos of that.
