I recently purchased this coin and the seller's pictures were horrible, but good enough to confirm it was a PCGS MS-63 in a old green rattler holder. The coin looked really nice in the picture, and I assumed it would be a solid 63 and maybe a 64 with it being in a OGH. So I thought I'd buy it and stick it in my 7070. I receive the coin (no returns so I'm stuck with it) and it has some kind of residue and fingerprints all over it. The coin looks worse in hand than it does in the pictures

My thoughts are this was a chemical reaction that occurred inside the holder, but have no idea so that is why I'm asking.

It looks like dip residue that was not rinsed off the coin The coin would have turned long after it was entombed.

If this was an ebay purchase, it's covered by their seller protection under "not as described".

The nick on the rim next to the L in LIBERTY is on both sides of the coin. Looks like it was pinched with something, I think I can even see tool marks from needle nose pliers or something. Even with ignoring the residue all over it on top of that the thing looks like it was run over by a big rig. It's covered in nicks, scrapes, rim dings, etc.

I don't see how this ever got into a 63 holder, period.

I didn't even notice the rim damage at first! Yeah that coin looks as if it was switched out. It's not MS-63.

Open a case with ebay if you can.

What do you recommend I use instead? When I make my pictures small enough to upload directly through this site they are such poor quality it's impossible to use them for much of anything.

Landon, I use PhotoBucket for my on-line image storage. Government computer systems don't like imageshack for some reason. But PhotoBucket is OK (for now anyway, subject change at any moment)!

Don't take my comments seriously, just venting my frustration with not being able to imageshack or ebay links at work.

The unattractive toning does not preclude an MS-63 grade and at least in these images I'm not seeing excessive contact marks. It's a common-date, uncirculated BU dollar. There's little cost difference from AU up to MS-63. I'd crack it and soak in acetone if I wanted a coin for the album. If you hate it and the seller won't take it back, take good photos and flip it yourself on ebay or here on CCF.

Not worth making a fuss over, IMO.

It is part of the slab, not rim damage. The inner gasket that PCGS used for that slab type had three little nibs to help hold the coin in place.

Thank you, I did not know that. Now that I went and looked again I don't know how I missed it. I was just upset with the way it looked, it's a hideous looking coin in hand.

With the cost in shipping it both ways I have decided to keep the coin. I paid 40.00 for it, so not like it is an expensive coin or anything. I never even contacted the seller. As far as the unattractive toning goes, it doesn't look like toning at all to me, it looks like chemical residue. There are 4 fingerprints on it that show up at different angles as well.

I hate the way it looks so I think I will crack it out and soak it in acetone because I think this coin in raw state post-acetone dip is worth as much as looking like this in the slab though I could be wrong.

Hi Landon: I looked at the auction you won. There is no doubt the coin is MS63 and genuine - in it's original slab from the mid-1980s.

The auction had very poor images and NO reverse image. If you want to return it, I don't blame you. In the future I recommend avoiding auctions with poor/missing images.

Thanks, BH1964. I normally would not have bid on an auction like this. I just felt reasonably sure I would receive a genuine coin in a genuine slab, which I did. I never anticipated it looking like this though. I knew coins turned in slabs I just had not seen it for myself so it never crossed my mind. I won this coin because he had two of these auctions closing within minutes of one another. I bid on this one and was outbid, so I went and bid on the other one just like it and won that item(it is posted in the grading forum). I don't know if there was a bid retraction or if the seller cancelled a bid to save on shipping or what, but I somehow returned as the high bidder and winner of the item.
