New into collecting them, just have a 1834 XF-45 real nice, anyway my question is I was wondering if anyone knew the different variations of the 1836 1/2 Dollar. My price guides says there are maybe 4, one with 50/00, one with 50cents, but not sure on the other two. Thanks,

There are actually 25 different Overton varieties for that year. There are 21 for your 1834. Maybe a more specific question would help?

The 1836 comes in two sizes, one with a lettered edge and one with a reeded edge. I think Overton has 20+ 1836 variations.
edit: amida beat my response while I was lookin' up Overtons!

Well I'm a real new coin collector, so maybe my first question should be what book would you suggest that I get that would show me the many variations of these coins. I was only commenting on the 1936 variation because the shop I was in had one for about $300.00 and it was graded AU-50, real nice coin, but I noticed in a price guide for that grade a price of $1,000 and didn't know why. I would love you to tell me my coin variation. I will attach photos. Thanks

Early Half Dollar Die Varieties by Al Overton is the book you want. A reverse picture would be essential in attributing your coin.

Is this the coin you said was XF45? To be completely honest, it looks more like a VF25. Also, the nick on the rim is undesirable and will probably affect the value. When you see things like this rim ding, point it out to the dealer and work him down. Never trust the grade written on a flip, or what the dealer tells you. Gotta learn to grade for yourself. Check out this site: http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/This site can give you a clue about varieties, but in no way is it a definitive reference. Far from it. http://www.coinfacts.com/half_dolla...dollars.html

IMHO, this is a borderline XF coin with pleasing surfaces. The rim hit is negligible to me, but a hit like that on Liberty's cheek would be an eyesore. I think that VF-25 is too low; especially so, given all the feathers on the bird, the shield and claws. This series is known for having uneven strikes, and many collectors assign grades according to the strongest details and not the weakest. Notice the difference in detail on the stars - left side/right side. One side looks VF, and the other looks XF.
This said, I think that Drsandman2's advice is excellent.

I think the scan doesn't look quite as good as the actual coin, it's probably in the middle somewhere. Thanks though, I appreciate all the help.

I will go VF-30 but don't take that to the bank. As to attribution on your 1834, I believe this is O-121 Small Date, Small Letters with rarity factor of R-3 (scarce - 201-500 known). Obv 18 - "stair step date" #'s progressively lower & closer together from L to R, mouth slightly open & ugly curl to upper lip Rev U - horn top 5 higher than 0 & tipped sharply to left, line 3 of stripe 5 bold to crossbar 2, upper right serif of I in PLURIBUS missing or filled, left side of T in line with right side of I. As to your ? on the 1836, the Capped Bust with lettered edge has 23 varieties. The 1836 with the Reeded Edge has a mintage figure of 1200+ and is quite pricey in any grade. Almost forgot - to the forum

Very nice bust half Nice job as usual jeffrose regarding the variety. Somehow when I see that upper lip curl I think of Elvis. I don't think it's XF45 but VF30 sounds good.
