I posted about my finds today while coin roll hunting in another thread, and it made me wonder how many others are doing this. I started hunting through halves this week and today I found a whole roll of keepers. 7 1964 halves and 13 40% halves. I also got a few rolls of nickels today and got one keeper a 1959 in VG condition. I would be interested in hear stories about others that are doing this and any tips that you would be willing to share. Thanks, BenVA

i use to go threw rolls all the time, I don't as much anymore cause I have too many that I need to figure out what to do with first b4 I go buying more. Also at my bank we never have half dollars or things like that so I cant get rolls of those, but I do always look for older looking wrappers on the coins and ill buy those. I have found that the older wrappers have better coins in them, I guess because they have just been sitting in the vault for years and years.

Good tips so far I will keep them in mind. I think someone must have cashed in the roll I got today accidentally or maybe one of there kids took it and cashed it in. My reason for this is that they were stacked in the roll in order. The 1964 halves were all together.

Hi Ben
Welcome to the forum !!
There are a lot of roll searchers here ,, I know that Iam one !!
Im sure you already have this figuered out , but take your returned rolls as far from the bank you got them from as you can .
and even then mark the wrappers so that you know you have already searched them .
If you happen to go through any truely small towns 1 to 2 thousand people stop and buy rolls ,, the coins tend to re circulate in thoose type of towns and many times for many years.

I've been going through rolls of Jefferson nickels trying to fill up a Dansco album. It's been very satisfying because I find something each time. I'm really surprised how many older dates I still find in circulation. Haven't found a 1950-D yet, but maybe I will someday. It's also a great way to introduce my Grandchildren to collecting. I've found some Lincoln wheat cents in rolls, but you have to go through a lot of penny rolls before you find any. It's still fun.

I mainly focus on nickels, I started with those rolls cause they were cheap and would keep be busy for hours. I still find 1939's every once and a while, I think I am up to about 5 or 6 of them. thats kinda also what got me hooked, the first roll of nickels I got had a 1939 in it and I always wanted to find another one, now I know they arent as hard to find as I first thought

I was mostly going through pennies and nickels until I read through some posts on treasurenet forum. They have a section on coin roll hunting, and most are going through halves. It looks like they are finding a good bit of silver. I have had best luck with nickels so far, but I may focus more on halves for a while. I cant seem to find as many wheats in the penny rolls as I use to. Keep the great replies coming, BenVA

Very interesting, but no one seems to be searching dimes and quarters. Is there a reason why? Jim

So you guys are just going to the bank, asking to buy a roll of whatever, and searching through it? Sounds kind of fun! I didn't know you could do that.

Jim, I have tried searching through dime and quarter rolls. I have never had any luck. I put the local newspaper in the boxes where they are sold. I count tons of quarters, but never find any silver. I did get a silver quarter in change a while back though. BenVA

I tried it a couple of times. I got 1 40% Kennedy. I don't like Kennedy half dollars at all, but being a good collector, I had to buy a cheap album and start my collection anyway. Never bought any more. Been meaning to try again. I don't like Kennedys, so I'd be willing to finish it off with face value coins. I won't pay a premium for them.

I search nickels, dimes and halves, mostly -- I haven't had much luck with quarters lately so have stopped getting them for the time being.
I'm always afraid that if I take the coins back to the bank I got them from, I'll end up a week or two from now looking through the same rolls of coins, so I buy them at one bank but turn them in to another.

search as often as I can. I search all the dime and quarter rolls at work (usually find 1 silver .25 for each 30-40 rolls, and 1 silver 10 for each 25-30), plus half dollar rolls that I buy at work, and from the banks, when I go to them.
