Discovering Nature Coin Discoloration

ltredbeard New Member United States 9 Posts	Posted 04/14/2012 6:24 pm Hey guys thanks for the great forum and community. I just bought an unopened 1997 Discovering Nature 50 cent set and when it came in two of the coins were half in their cases and half out. I managed to snap the cases shut without touching the coins ( it was actually pretty easy), but when I flipped the Labrador coin over it had some strange discoloration. I used google to find some images of tarnished silver coins and I think that is what this coloring is, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts? Thanks! Report this Post to the Staff

trout1105 Pillar of the Community Australia 7096 Posts	Posted 04/14/2012 6:38 pm ltredbeard What you have there is a toned silver coin. Don't try and remove this you will damage the coin. There are a lot of collectors that really admire this effect on coins Toning happens when the silver in the coin reacts with the environment it is stored in. Report this Post to the Staff

I can see how many collectors admire this effect because I think it's stunning.
