I do not believe this is a 1997 double die on the ear from a picture I found on the internet but can someone confirm that? and if it isn't can anyone tell me more about this?

Thank you! Mike

Gary had it right - just a die crack.

A die gouge would be more smooth-edged and would be a lot straighter.

remember that a die gouge is a scratch made in the die with a tool or cleaning instrument. The result we see is the coin filling in the recess on the die caused by the gouge.

A die crack on a coin is also the result of the coin filling in a recess, but in this case it's a crack - much like a crack in a sidewalk. Jagged, not straight.

Here is another crack similiar to yours. Just in a little different location...

This one runs from just above the ear all the way up to the edge at the "w"

Fairly common if you look for 'em...

However, isn't it possible that a different Lincoln posed for that coin and he had a bad ear? Same with the one with the thing in the hair. Could just be a bad hair day.

Hey morganman. I like that saying at the bottom of your post. I think I'll copy it and use it.
