1997 Penny With Ear Issues - Coin Community Forum

A die gouge would be more smooth-edged and would be a lot straighter. remember that a die gouge is a scratch made in the die with a tool or cleaning instrument. The result we see is the coin filling in the recess on the die caused by the gouge. A die crack on a coin is also the result of the coin filling in a recess, but in this case it's a crack - much like a crack in a sidewalk. Jagged, not straight. Report this Post to the Staff
