I'm sure we all realise that "king" George V did not reign from "1865 to 1936", and that a supposed "Certificate of Valuation" issued by "The Secret Chest" does not represent anything remotely near the true market valuation (for "insurance" purposes, or otherwise) of the said listing by "thescretchest"...

There's also a typo in their ebay name. They mustn't put much regard in the finer details.

Things about his so called Certificate that stand out to me:
He mis-spelled thesecretchest as noted by FNQ. thescretchest
Dates of reign as noted by FNQ are ridiculous. 1865 is DoB.
Non-payers will get negative feedback.

As I understand it, a seller can't leave negative feedback.

He says its' condition is VF; CV in Maccas for VF is $4500

There are 4 bids from 2 bidders so far.
At least 2 people with more money than sense I guess.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

One of the most dodgy altered date '23's I have seen in quite some while!

Yeah,i had to do a double take when I first saw the listing,i couldn't believe it,they have botched the 2 as well.
I thought the Zammit guy(i should have said Qld. instead of Brisbane) may have been an innocent party but my Brother says the certificate is a template you download from the net and fill in the details.

ebay will have to get tough with these listings, already some dealers won't buy 1934/35 Florins.

Lousy photos, and feedback shows he has never sold a coin before this one.

Hadn't thought to look here before now - have been busy with my head buried in my own coins.

Good work to anyone who did report this item, question the seller, etc.

From what I am aware of, there were quite a lot of probing questions, reports to ebay (including phone calls), and I think even a report to the AFP before this item ended, having relisted at least once.

It is a wonder anyone bothers (or do they, anymore?) at reporting this sort of attempt at fraud, given the amount of effort taken to achieve something that should be straight forward, has so much impact on credibility of all online (and 'bricks and mortar') sellers, and is most certainly in the interests of protecting those who do not know.

A classic example of items that are obviously tampered with, and just keep circulating through regardless of reporting, are the 1930 altered date pennies.

Disappointing .....

But I've strayed - This post was meant to be a simple 'thanks' for your efforts - eventually people power did at least stop this listing, for now.

Good work!

Tim.

Yeah,Ebay has to get tough, that coin was unbelievable. As I posted elsewhere we had a Coin/Stamp dealer talk to us for 1 period a week at School in the 1960's and it always stuck in my head the number of forged 1923 halves he used to come across, and they are all still out there somewhere.

Sadly, I don't think ebay are interested ....

At this stage it appears to be all up to others to try to pressure a seller in to removing a listing like this.

Hmmm... I wonder if ebay could be open to civil action if they do nothing after being notified of a fraudulent auction post?

Might be interesting, given the moves in progress to make web sites take action against racial posts etc.

Further to last, it appears there may be hope.

Another thread recently started in World Coins discusses an ebay counterfeit coin committee, confirming existence, and talking about a CCF member being a member of this committee.

Perhaps there may be change in the wind?

The thing I can't get my head around is passing off an item as something it isn't is surely fraud, why should ebay be exempt from the law.
