So looking at that picture, can anybody tell me anything?
It clearly is a D.

I am hestitant to say anything because I am not 100% familiar with all the mint mark placements for that year. Is there anyway that you can get it a bit more in focus? This may be enough for the mercury experts but for so-so people like me, I will hold back my opinion until I see something a little more clear.

I can usually offer an opinion on whether the MM has been added or played with closeup clear pictures. With a coin such as this, I do not want to steer anyone in the wrong direction and will err on the side of caution rather than render an opinion that could really mess someone up.

Good luck, it looks okay, but to be positive I'd need to examine in hand, how is the edge, one trick counterfeiters have done is cut a D coin in half and glue it to a 1916-P also cut in half and sandwiched together.

Best advice as already given send it in to a TPG I'd vote PCGS if you plan on reselling it or ANACS if you want an honest opinion and a much fairer cost to authenticate and slab. Both are just as reputable, however PCGS coins will generally bring a good premium price when selling over ANACS graded coins.

The photos are not clear, unless it is examine first hand, this will go no where. And even with clear photos, it will help to determine its genuine state.

The other option is to have this auction in one of the bigger firms, the house will take care of all the process.

what is the end goal here anyway? authenticate to sell it or authenticate to know you have it? if the latter, go sign up at ANACS, send them the coin and in the very least its slabbed and authenticated for now...if you ever want an upgraded grading shot at it, then go pay the dollars to PCGS since you know you have the real deal

have you taken it to a coin shop yet?

you're never going to get the answers/affirmation you seek through this process unless you purchase a 400x microscope cam for $30 on Amazon and post those shots which still may not help

What is the story with the 2X2 ? Any idea why it would be marked 1961 ?

I didn't see anyone address this, but the last two digits in 1916 reversed give you 1961. I noticed because I do that sometimes.

No need to get snappy sir, I am just trying to see what I have before I go into a shop and look like an idiot. I bought a microscope today, before reading your post. I'm not ignorant, I JUST started dealing with coins. I didn't have the proper equipment to post nice pictures that day. I will be uploading some really nice ones in just a moment here.
I realize I am new to coins, but there is no need to try and treat me like I'm a child. I know what I have to do, I just wanted some opinions on the coin, that's all. I don't want to upset anybody or anger anyone because I took bad pictures. I will fix that give me a second to set-up my new equipment.

By the way, This coin did not have a big red sign pointing to it.
I was looking through a roll of them and came across it, so give me a little
credit for finding a gem instead belittling me because I didn't already own
high definition photography equipment. I'm here to learn as most of us probably
are.

I made the mistake of mixing up the two numbers that is why. Simple mistake.

Here's my advice. Though you may bring it to a shop for a second opinion, be aware the shop could be wrong. A member was recently told by a coin store his $3 piece was fake. The forum could not say for certain that it was authentic and advised him to send it in. He did, it is authentic and he now has a $4000+ coin that he was told was scrap. If at any point someone is trying to make you feel foolish, walk away.

The feeling I get from this thread is that the majority of the posters believe it is highly likely it is authentic. It is just that we can't say so definitively from pictures. There are just some things pictures cannot show. If it were me, I would send it to ANACS if I wanted to keep it or PCGS if I wanted to sell it. And if it does come back as a fake, there is absolutely no reason to feel foolish.

After editing my multiple spelling and grammar errors, I realized I neglected to say I hope you continue to update us on your activities with this coin.

Cheers!

you've read my mood/intentions incorrectly
my goal was not to make you feel ignorant nor was my tone intended to sound as if I was jumping on you and treating you like a child, I'll take the higher road on this and apologize for making you feel the way you did

simply put, your best bet is an investment to a major TPG and have them work this out for you. Your best case scenario is that you have a winner and huge amount of money you'd be sitting on...your worst case is that you have a nice conversational piece with a good story
