Poll Question
So one of the three 1936 dot cents will be up for sale at Heritage in the near term. I think it would be fun for people to guess where it will sell. This coin last sold for $207,000 in 2004. I will tell you that my vote is $178,000. Personally, I think that this is a highly overrated variety. What do others think? Post your exact guess. The closest guess wins a 1936 dot ten cents (kidding!)

According to CCN, this is a PCGS 63 Red bought by Chet Krause in 2004 at another Heritage auction. This one has "distinctly different surfaces" than the two others that "lend strong credence to its claim as the only Mint State example".

Oh that is the one that was stolen from Pittman, slightly damaged and returned. It was sold to Chet in the 3rd Pittman sale. I think your price is too high (before hammer fees)...

I think it should be a lot lower. But you never know what "matrix" of events could lead to a higher price!!

The coin shouldn't be in a MS-63 Holder . This is the perfect example of how key date coins are treated differently than other dates . The coin is damaged - period !

The latest CCN has a pic on the front cover. The damage is very obvious. I would consider more than slight. But it may have the intent of the photographer to highlight the damage.
I wonder how it looks "in hand"?

I haven't picked up a CCN lately, but can someone describe the damage? I'm pretty sure I'm looking at a picture of the coin on Google right now, so I see what it looks like, but what happened to it?

im thinking over 350k. Some collectors are crazy, will pay that for the damaged coin :P

@jq86: It was stolen from JJ Pittman's home in 1964, and later returned loose in an envelope with other coins.
And people thought gluing a 1921 50c to a post was bad.

Re: " Double J " Back in the early 60's There was a theory as to why there was only a couple of '36 dotted cents. What you mentioned was one of them."The dot somehow came off"  If I remember right,I read it in an old Charlton Catalogue. Maybe one of you guys have an old Charlton from the 1960's to verify?  I know it sounds funny/stupid, but it's true. (It's one of those things one will never forget!) |
