Hello:) What do you think about this SLQ? In my opinion some details are nice and sharp, like breast/chainmail, shield and feathers, but surface is dark and hmm dirty? This is patina or some kind of surface damage? I haven't this coin yet, pics are from seller and were taken through the plastic holder, so there are "fuzzy" places, but I think you can say something about the state of this quarter. What do you think, how much is it worth?

I would go AU53, maybe AU55. The right knee and lower leg show wear along with the chain mail and the right wing of the eagle shows wear. SLQ's are hard to grade and it seems each year has their own standards. There are XF graded 1924 coins where you can barely make out the date and some recessed date years with no center shield detail, missing rivets, most of the chain mail patern missing, and the grade out at MS65. So why they grade this coins MS? Because of luster? Details aren't sharp and clear. My coin seems to doesn't have any luster, only this "dark thing" on surface:) But details are a bit clearer and sharper. My inquiry may seem strange to you, but I am a novice collector:)

I would grade this as EF45, however, to me, it appears that this coin may have been cleaned a while ago and retoned. anyone else comment on this?

52Raymo you talking about my coin?:) panzaldi - you break my heart with this EF45:) I thought that the AU is quite sure, but as I mentioned, I'm an amateur.

Quote: So why they grade this coins MS? Because of luster? This series is notorious for weak strikes. Any coin can be MS with weak details, all that matters is that there is no wear on the coin. The cream of the crop for the Standing Liberty quarters will have full head details and you will see FH as the notation. These command a premium. Luster does play a part in determining grade but it is the lack of wear that will make it MS, and lack of hits(usually from being transported in bags)and strong luster/eye appeal that will help determine the MS grade. I really like your 1919.

sorry about that thusdayclub. I am not an expert on SLQ, however, there appears to be more wear, particularly on eagle wings and the high points on the shield drape and lady than I would like to see in an AU coin. look closely and you will also see wear on the stars and some of the lettering. jack jeckel is correct in that certain years are harder to grade. it could pull an AU50, but I would be surprised.

Ok guys, so far I do not write how much I paid for this coin. Please write how much is worth in your opinion, I'm curious how much money will be here:) I know that it is difficult to estimate with these photos, but it's just for fun.

Remember, grading is subjective...I would value this coin in the $110 range

I think it could grade AU-50. The amount of wear looks consistent with an AU coin. I don't see any mint luster which is something I usually see on AU+ coins from the 20th century and that makes me a little uncomfortable giving it a higher grade. Numismedia values it in AU-50 at $106.

I'm in at AU50 at least maybe 53, though I could see a TPG putting it in an EF45 holder just as easily. Tough coin to grade from static photos, need to have this one in hand and under a good lamp!
