Hi everyone, I recently took a chance with this non-graded 5 cent NFLD coin.

Can you help me tell if it's real? I really want to send it to ICCS for grading.

What grade would you assign to this coin? Thanks everyone

Please note: the picture I am posting was a very sad attempt to counterfeit, this is NOT my coin nor is it even still alive today... it was destroyed years ago after a local coin dealer purchased it.

He states "counterfeits weren't circulating too much when I purchased it so I didn't even consider it."

I don't know too much about counterfeits but even I can see the picture that I posted isn't real... now about yours, I guess you can compare. and wait for someone like SPP-Ottawa who can give you more information

artido, I've never owned/held this coin, I just have possession of about a dozen pictures of counterfeits, I presume weight? diameter, but you can see the cast doesn't look right

jake I have no clue what it weighs...is that a good indication?

DBM...I have my fingers crossed too. The only reason I took a chance is because I had the charlton on me, and I compared the picture in the catalogue to the coin very closely and the four looked right to me...the curve at the end.

I really hope I didn't waste my money on this coin :(

jake the pictures you posted look like an obvious counterfeit...no lump on the throat, the jewels aren't even...etc. Don't you find?

Definitely a counterfeit. Mushy detail, numbers and letters are poorly shaped. The rims and denticles also look bad.

I would return it ASAP.

Thanks everyone. Next time I will ask for pics and post them before buying. Seems like the only way to buy rare coins is if they are graded...way too many fakes

I found this one on ebay. It appears to be genuine: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1946-c-Newf...em416f87c4e5

I noticed that the 9 and the 6 vary in thickness on the genuine examples. The counterfeits are more or less consistent in thickness throughout these two numbers. The 4 also and there is an overall lack of sharpness.

It's amazing how at first glance and even second glance nothing appears to be wrong with the coin. As soon as you see it though it's like one of those magic eye images and your whole perspective changes.

I hope you are able to get your money back and thanks very much for posting this. It is a very helpful educational tool.
