The best marker is the serif on the second N of Newfoundland. It is round and shaped almost like a ball.

nickelsguy,
I'm confused.

Are you saying that the serif on the second N of Newfoundland is round and shaped almost like a ball on genuine coins ?

Which serif, the down vertical or the up vertical or both ?

^^^ No, the example nickelsguy posted is a forgery. The serif he is referring to is circled in the picture. ^^^

Sorry for the coinfusion. As O-train stated. The fake has the round serif. As circled.

You must mean the third N in NewfouNdlaNd...

Is there any way that you can get your money back? Where did you buy it from? If they wont refund you get the RCMP involved (this should happen anyway, so that this coin is not passed onto someone else).

unfortunately the old addage of caveat emptor applies.. Unless the guys guarantied it was genuine then not much can be done..Lets hope he is honest enoughto give the refund..If it was bought on ebay then notify them, and get the proof you need and a full refund will be issued....

I finally got my money back :) I do believe however that the gentlemen who sold it to me had no clue. Very nice man, I showed these posts with the comparisons of the real coin you guys provided and right away he apologized and took back the coin.

So thankful this forum exists. Thanks everyone

What do people generally do with their modern forgeries ?

I collect old forgeries that were intended to deceive people in their ordinary circulation money.

I have, unfortunately, bought a lot of modern forgeries intended to deceive collectors like this Newfoundland 5 Cents.

I don't want to sell them as genuine but I also don't want to sell them as fakes only for the buyer to sell them as genuine. Some of them are outstandingly attractive so I don't want to deface them.
What should I do with them ?
What do other people do ?

I would post the fakes here and explain the necessary points to establish that they are fakes.

We then all learn from that ...
