As a newbie with a fairly small collection I'm looking for good ways to expand my collection. So from your experiences, where can I find rare/interesting/foreign coins in circulation (or in other words not going to a coin shop and having to pay for them)? Basically I'm looking for any collection-expanding or improving tips that you may have.

I loved auctions like this when I started out. I have bought from this seller multiple time. They have excellent pictures and descriptions of every coin which is rare for large amounts of coins.

*** OK that auction has about 20-30 coins I don't have and a few countries. let me know if you want it cause if Not there's a good chance I'm gonna bid on it.

The most fun I've had is the year I purchased one of the huge bank bags of foreign coins for my Birthday.
When the Euro became the common currency in Germany, the bank there started selling bags full of foreign and domestic coins to dealers. They weigh in at about twenty two kilos, and there are simply thousands of coins in circulated condition waiting for you to find them. The downside to this is there are often tokens hiding mixed in, and not all the coins are going to be in very good condition.

Generally these bags run about $130, plus shipping. So far, ebay is the only way I know to get hold of one. I trust the bags more than I do the quarter, half, or pounds weighed out and set aside, because you can bet your Grandma these've been searched for the prime coins already.

Another good way to go is to trade coins with other collectors. This forum has a lot of buying, selling and trading activity going on; the only requirement is that you post 50 posts before you initiate dealings. It's up to the seller if they want to sell to someone with less than 50 posts.

My preferred way of buying new coins for the collection, is to go to the coin store on Saturday morning, and sit there for an hour or three, digging through their bulk bins. The guys there are always really nice, they love to talk (and I love listening to the conversations the other customers have; you can learn a lot.) I know I've spent enough time in the store that they almost always give me a really good deal on a couple of pounds of coins every week.

It's always fun to find a neat coin in your pocketchange, or in the cash register if you're working the other side of it. But the difficult part is you're depending on chance, and it might be weeks or months before you find a new coin to add. I hope that somewhere in all this rambling, I've said something that might be considered useful for you, Arthrene. :)

(P.S. Thanks for that link, GraceOutcast! >.> I just spent too much money on some of the harder to find African countries It's odd, he's right here in San Antonio. o.o Maybe I can save on shipping.)

You can always try your local bank branch - it doesn't hurt to ask. Find out what they do with the "weird foreign stuff" that they receive. Arrangements will vary - sometimes there'll be a teller that collects coins who gets to keep them, sometimes they know a local dealer or charity they sell or donate the coins to, sometimes they simply throw them away. If they don't have any other arrangements, ask if you can come in and take them off their hands for them.

Churches and charities are also good, especially ones you or your family are involved with. People put all sorts of weird stuff in the offering plate or donation box. Again, it doesn't hurt to ask what they do with it.

Otherwise, just ask around the local shops and businesses. Be friendly and helpful, and it can be amazing the good contacts you can make. I know one fellow who's always coming to coin club meetings with stories of the coins his "mates" (in the Australian sense of the word) have given him - he seems to have all his neighbours and half the shop attendants in town keeping an eye out for unusual coins for him.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I live near and go into New York at times. If you are near a big city there are usually lots of currency exchange outlets (as well as big banks) where you can find all kinds of stuff. They do charge a markup, but it usually not worse than buying coins online and having them shipped.

Good luck hunting!

Welcome arthrene to the forum. Everyone is going to be different as for their methods. Here are the methods I use to expand my collection.
1) bulk ebay sales for world coins
2) coin roll searching - alot of fun, but can be very time consuming (US, and sometimes Canada slips in)
3) Make friends at the bank as Sap said. The bank I just opened an account with just tosses world coins in the trash. Now they save them for me.
4) Flea markets, pawn shops, etc. - not tried this yet myself as I'm tight on cash right now. However, you can sometimes find a good bargin.
5) If you have friends that travel ask them to bring some money back. Or if you have family in the military send them some cash and ask them to send you some from the countries they are in back.
