Better, but too far. A little too much diffusion as indicated by a complete loss of luster presentation. Now that you've bracketed the lighting range, you can work the middle to see where you like it the most. Personally I prefer more like your latest but with a bit more luster showing. Some folks prefer more like your first shots. You need to decide where to put each coin based on how that coin looks in-hand, and only you can judge that.

Looked dull & lifeless to me too. I abandonded the Jansjo's on this one & used a different light source at a distance of about 18 inches.

What were you using to diffuse the lighting?

Piece of an old white t-shirt. Maybe too thick for this application but I was using an 8 inch aluminum Home Depot clamp on light fixture with a 100 watt 6500K daylight mini CFL bulb. What is everyone using for diffuser material? I tried using Ray's suggestion for diffusing the jansjo's but found that I still get distracting hot spots on the coins surface. I may have to build some type of light diffusion system. And I thought underwater photography was hard :)

My favorite diffuser matl is Canson Opalux. $5 per 24 inch sheet.

Jeff changed the whole lighting setup (see several posts up). Canadian Banknotes I would be happy with that level of product. Very tough to get nice even lighting while retaining enough luster to make the coin "pop".
